  • Camper Charging Question in Reverse

OK so i have decided on my camper if you can call it that a Goldstream storm and i am figuring out my anderson plug wiring options now my question is as follows

As i already have a duel battery management system i was planning on just running the anderson plug wiring straight off the aux battery.

Now i understand by doing it this way the camper battery and the aux battery will be drained if i leave the anderson plug connected when stopped however does current flow back upstream as my camper has a built in Cteck changer for when 240 is avaliable if i leave the anderson plug connected will the camper and the aux battery be charged with wiring as above or does the current only flow 1 way

Hope this can be understood as i dont know much about wiring

Yes run your anderson plug direct from your aux battery but use 6B&S cable (in other words big stuff)

Yes your Ctek will charge the aux battery but it won't be as efficient as having it directly connected to your aux battery.

Yep sounds to me the way you've described it ( without benefit of a wiring diagram ) that the Ctek charger in the camper will charge both batteries.
Depnding on how your dual battery isolator works it might be an issue if you have the Ctek charger on AND you start the car - this might then connect camper battery/aux battery to main starting battery and also your alternator - so alternator and charger will be trying to charge all the batteries at the same time  - may not be an issue but I would avoid that situation. ie turn charger off before starting the car.
Thick wire's running all the way is the way to go also do not have the Anderson plug where it can get dirt in it.

        Thanks guys

Sorry one more question the trailer will have an anderson setuop for charging the van battery but the salesman is also reccomending a hot wire be installed to the number 2 pin for running the fridge whilst underway.

Now if i have the anderson plug why would i need the hotwire as well???

        Im confused

Sounds wierd to me. But then I'm not a caravan person. Presume he means no 2 pin on the towing connector ( for the indicators etc ).
I would have thought whilst underway the fridge would run happily off the caravan battery which was being charged through the Anderson connector.

Yea I agree...the guy wanting to charge through the trailer wire plug is not correct. You do not want to do this as this is why the anderson plug is there. The wire in the trailer wiring is to small.

Hi, i have run a hot wire through number 2 pin to charge a trailer battery previously but a 4mm wire is about as big as you can use and this is not really good enough to run a fridge. I now run anderson plugs and that is all you should need.

              cheers Andrew

Re: Camper Charging Question in Reverse

Thanks guys i had another chat to him i think what he is saying that due to the draw of the fridge is that anderson charges the battery on the move and the hot wire is just to keep the fridge going while on the move so full charge goes into the battery as apparenently the 3 ways have a large current draw. So in essance the hot wire does not perform the charging duties it is just a power line.

Now if this is the case i am assuming that to avoid a flat battery i would run both the anerson and hotwire off my aux

Re: Camper Charging Question in Reverse

Well personally I think the guy is talking ( bleep) :?

If you run thick enough wires ( 10 mm or bigger, 16mm if you can ) via your Anderson connector it will be more than enough to charge you van battery AND run the fridge whilst underway. Another, parallel 3 or 4mm wire is not going to make any perceptible difference. In fact it could be dangerous because if your Anderson connector comes adrift you'll be trying to charge your battery and run the fridge via a small wire which might overheat.

I Agree, there is no way a wire that runs through your trailer plug is going to be good enough to run a fridge. good wiring to your andreson plug is all you need.

what size ctek ya running, the reason i ask is when i charge my aux battery if i dont disconnect my start battery my ctck is charging both, i know it is probably nothing to worry about but it is a ctek 7000 and it gets red hot charging, in other words the solenoid opens up and charges both, in this situation would a 15 amp ctek be better or what. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

                          Samo,

If you use the 10% rule, what you need to do is add the Amp hours of both batteries ((100Ah + 75Ah) example) then you would need an 18 amp charger.
So on those numbers a 15 amp charger will start to struggle. The next ctek up is the 25 amp which will do the job well and also leave a bit of freedom if batteries are changed/upgraded in the future.

Quick question while we are talking charging/plugs etc
what is the maximum size multi stranded conductor that will fit in an Anderson plug crimp terminal. Thanks.

I have learn't the hard wad way. Don't undersize your fridge wires. I just purchased an ARB fridge and it comes standard with a cig plug. I can tell you that the fridge does not work if you plug this into the cig outlet in the back of the prado even though it is rated at 120W. On the 3rd night of our 3 week trip I had to do some field repairs and replace the cig plug on the fridge with an anderson connector and I ran thick wires directly from the battery isolator in the engine bay to the rear where it connects to the fridge. Problem solved and cold beer for the rest of the trip. Now that I'm back I just need to clean up the wiring a little.
