  • Hella Rallye 4000 Compact HID install

    Hi Guys

Sharing my install details for my nice new Hella Rallye 4000 Compact HID's onto my Sahara bar.

Bought the lights via EBay from Predator Performance Parts http://www.predatorparts.com.au. Good price for one each spread & spot with aftermarket 55W 6000k HID upgrades. The lights come already converted & everything looks really good (I pulled one of the lights apart to make sure!). Wiring loom, including HV extensions, & all hardware included with a bonus of clear covers which I think is up for a limited time.

I'd previously fitted wired up my switch which I bought from the USA http://www.TRDparts4U.com. It's the FJ Cruiser fog light switch which slides into the factory holes near the mirror control & illuminated orange with your dash lights.

Plenty of info on PP about how to wire things up so I won't go into detail. The main thing is finding somewhere to fit both ballasts which are external to the light & need to be kept high & dry. Best place I found was under the bonnet, each side of the headlights screwed into the quarter panel lining I suppose you'd call it.

    Drivers Side:

    Passenger Side:

This meant taking the battery out to fit the ballast, relay & fuse in. There's plenty of room between the side of the battery & the new hardware. Same on drivers side as my next thing is to put a second battery tray on that side so I wanted to make sure there's be lots of room. Don't forget to paint all your drill holes!

I tapped into the headlight high-beam wiring on the passenger side & ran the HV lines below the headlight & into the space behind the bar before hooking the waterproof connectors together & cable-tying everything out of the way. I found I had to drill out the rearmost of the existing holes in the top of the Sahara bar to get the HV wires through as the waterproof connectors attached to the cables are fat little buggers. I didn't want to just run the wires straight back to under the grille & wanted to make use of the extra holes to hide the wiring as best I could. Also put the wires into some of that plastic cable tube stuff to make it a bit prettier.

Then hit the light to make sure everything works!

So far I've only really driven around the block to align the lights & had a quick trip up a nearby hill where there aren't any street lights but gotta say I'm impressed with the light output. Very crisp white light & bloody bright. Happy all round.

The only thing I'd say is that there needs to be a longer lead between the fuse-holder and relay mount as the length supplied means they'd need to be mounted really close together. Not a biggie if you can get to everything but I needed to extend the cable a little as I wanted to make sure I could access the fuse without having to take the battery out of the car. The loom overall is good but very long, especially to the passengers light which isn't very far away. I ended up pulling the loom apart & cutting some excess length off.

Oh, and once all this was done I performed the most important mod of the day, thanks to Schaffer:

    Cheers

    Craig

You didn't waste any time fitting up the extra lights Craig! Looks damn fine! Pretty neat install too by the look of it. So do your ballasts make a noise?

      Hey Mate

Well....devoured the 4WDA review & picked them up shortly thereafter.

Yes, I noticed when I tested the lights without the motor on they made a whiny buzzy sound. No biggie & I really can't even hear it with the bonnet closed. No way you''d hear it from inside.

Just gotta get out & drive around in the dark a bit more to really get a feel for them.

Glad the write up helped. I never knew that many makes existed......

No Kidding! You get the buzzy sound as well. Ok that makes me feel somewhat better. No my buzzy sound isn't loud either and you certainly don't hear it with the engine running.

I had Lightforce's blue lens covers for the halogen globes but this doesn't seem necessary for the HID's. Might look into the Crystal Blue covers Lightforce do and see what that looks like. Living in the middle of Perth it's difficult to find a good spot to adjust properly. Last time I went out I dazzled the birds a bit. Then Dazzled the night mice a bit after a lightening adjust.
