  • 120 D4D vs 150 D4D Engine

I note same engine but intercooler is front mounted in a vertical position, resulting in same power output but better fuel economy?

So if this front location doesn't offer any greater air capacity or cooling effect then one might question the virtues of a bonnet scoop which has seen some discussion in another part of this forum..

And only 150 litres vs 180 for 120 series.

    Re: Same Engine

If think the decreased fuel consumption in the 150 would be more a function of the 15mm lower roof line than repositioning the intercooler.

      Re: Same Engine

The engine output figure is a nominal figure of the engine on a dyno not in the vehicle.

So a D4D with a top mount and a D4D with a front mount both strapped in an engine dyno and both with the same coolant temp, ambient temp, INTAKE temp, fuel temp etc etc have the same output.

Real world performance is going to be different when the engines are bolted into their respective body shapes, a front mount is always going to perform better in real world conditions, it might be a bees dick at speed but off idle/low speed the lower heat soak should be noticable.

Fuel economy is a sum of many things: Tuning, gearing, weight and aero dynamics and not always related to engine output.

        Re: Same Engine

do not forget that once you add your spotties on the front that will cut the amount of air flow over the intercooler. This is the reason I went to the top mounted hood scoop 8) Not only looks cool but functional

          Re: Same Engine

A top mounted intercooler would survive an animal strike better than a front mounted intercooler...

Of course, if the frontal impact is severe enough to damage the radiator, then it wouldn't matter whether the intercooler is top mounted or front mounted....

            Re: Same Engine

Exactly. You can drive a car with a damaged intercooler - it will just have no boost.

            A car without coolant however.....

              Re: Same Engine

I think that a front mounted intercooler would definitely get much more air through it, so that's not such a bad thing for performance. Plus it also makes it easier to work on the engine, as you can see from these two pictures:

              New layout

              vs old layout:

Maybe that could contribute to a lower bonnet line, although I'm not sure if the bonnet profile on the NG Prado is any lower than the 120 Series Prado.

Or maybe the NG Prado's intercooler is substantially larger than the previous model, and so it has to be front mounted....

surely economy improvement is the result of the new injectors and tuning.......

                          looks like it.

Hopefully us with the older D4D can upgrade in the future?

Sept 07 D4D here as well and I'm almost certain I'd have gotten the crappy injectors. I'd also heard the 150 had newly designed injectors, I'd say most certainly due to the issues Toyota continue to deny with the 07 era injectors. Toyota need to recall vehicles with the bad injectors, simple as that. Anyhow, I too look at the new ones with interest. So far so good though with the old ones.

Leachy, Where did the August 08 come from? I understood that there have been no issues from April 08 build on.

Am I wrong- It wouldn't be the first time ops:
