  • Wiring up a winch - Primary or Auxiliary Battery?

Just about to wire up my 12,000lb Tigerz11 winch to my Prado unsure of whether I should be wiring it up to the primary or auxiliary battery. A mate of mine recommended that I wire it up to the auxiliary as he knows of issues with winches connected to primary batteries. Some of his work vehicles where burning out the charging circuit as the alternator was trying to over-compensate for the drop of voltage in the battery.

I'm not a sparkie by trade so I was hoping that someone might be able to confirm the correct battery a winch should be wired to.

Primary, if you're burning out the charging circuit you're not winching properly

What do you mean by not winching properly? Not doing a 1:1 run/cool down ratio?

Yep, holding the button down and winching the whole way whereas you should be pulsing the winch in short runs. If it's straining, i.e. you're stuck in thick goey mud rig a double line pull. I also drive while winching but that isn't recommended in case you create slack in the rope and slip back causing a shock load and busting the rope.

There's reason your mates work vehicles burn out there charging circuit and the answer is simple. It's a work vehicle. Second only to the rental car when it comes to mechanical appreciation. I've had two work 4x4's, a dual cab Hilux and an 80's series. That poor old Hilux got flogged bad. Never broke though. I agree with D4D about the winching technique. Winches suck a huge amount of juice. And to answer the original question, use the primary. That's what I've always been told.

Agree. Use the primary and run the engine whilst winching.

Some dual battery setups allow you to connect the batteries for extra capacity but following the advice already provided regarding winching in stages you won't have any dramas with the primary providing it's in good nick.

Another good reason to stop every 2 minutes is, after slacking off the tension, to check that the cable is winding on the drum properly and not building up in the one spot.

Well done. I hope you used HUGE cable as winches suck HUGE current. I had mine professionally installed and the copper conductor in the wire they used is as about as think as my thumb.

                  Hi Guys,
I agree always run off the Start Battery, to get the best results in winching replace the battery with a Optima Spiral cell battery or Deka Intimadator, the standard lead acid or calcium batteries can not keep up with the load of the winch also can not recharge as fast, lower the voltage higher the current (AMPS) bigger the winch more power it will suck, 9500LB winch is plenty in prado, keep in mind the cheaper brands of winch's draw a lot more power compared to the better quality winch's.
Secondly if you are winching, it is also a good thing to disconnect or isolate your Auxillary battery so that your vechile's charging system can keep up with charging the winch.

I agree with that. I have installed a few over the years and now only install as follows:

Dispense with the cable as supplied and replace with good quality stick welding cable. Make up lugs with 1/2 copper tube, falttened on one end and drilled out for mounting. Drill a 1/8" hole in the lug, just wher the lug changes from flat to round. Mount to cable, with plenty of flux. Heat lug tip with propane, and feed solder in to 1/8" hole until it comes out of bottom of lug. Cover join with heat shrink, and you now have about the best cable possible for the job. Cheap too.

P.S. I round off the lugs on the grinder, and solder tin them all over as well. Comes up as a really profesh job.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.
