  • Battery monitors

    Hi all,
Can anyone steer me in the right direction about what sort of battery monitor I should get to suit running dual batteries in my prado.
    Cheers Ray

    Re: Battery monitors

    Ray,

I would suggest the Redarc BCDC 1220..

    or

    or

The newer Prados use a load sensing alternator with regulated voltage control.
So a "solonoid" type system wont really do the job...

Here is a link to the install on my 2006 Prado

      Re: Battery monitors

The RanOx is the best unit available in my opinion.

Plenty on here about it plus I have pics in the "My Rig Build-up" section if you're keen to see what it looks like.

            Re: Battery monitors

ABR sells a couple of different types of battery monitors that will do what you want. Here is the website:

You might also want to look at the Redarc Battery Management System.

Piranha have some stuff too http://www.piranhaoffroad.com.au/index. ... y-monitors

But not being able to justify a $300 monitor, I took a cheap approach and bought one of the Narva dual cig lighter socket assemblies that also have a ( simple ) battery voltage monitor included.

                about $35 from Repco

I cut off the plug and wired the unit directly to the second battery. That way I get a battery condition indicator and two power sockets direct to the aux battery supply in one box. The sockets are handy for the GPS, Ipod etc where you don't want the power to go off when you remove the key.

Please note : this unit has not got the features of the more sophisticated ones mentioned in posts above, but it's good enough for me to tell that the battery is charging and it's general condition. ie all lights on = charging OK. When engine is turned off it will settle back to the yellow and red lights and then after a while ( time will depend on what accessories are running ) will go back to the red light only. If it doesn't follow this pattern something's wrong and I go checking.

I can't tell how much actual "charge" is left in the battery once down to the "red", but I doubt any voltage based battery monitor can do that accurately anyway.

I also put a toggle switch in line so I can disconnect the whole unit if I want. This is handy to turn off the leds or any accessories plugged in.

As far as mounting goes I just undid the screws, reversed the case, and stuck it up below the normal 12V outlet with heavy duty double sided tape - has not moved yet.

                Cheers, Wayne

                  Re: Battery monitors

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with any other battery monitors recently, i have seen a couple of cheapies on ebay, not too sure on the quality of these though. i'm looking to get one at some stage soon but not too sure which one.

                  Thanks

                    Battery monitors

I have the piranha one, it is slimline and u can select main or second battery for voltage

I did look at a few types and picked this one as it is smaller than the normal gauge ones
...If its not on all 4's it's not on.....

Time to drag up an old thread...

I'm thinking about a battery monitor for a dual battery system that actually tells me something useful, rather than just how many volts I have. Things like how much longer I can run the fridge for without having to charge the battery.

I like the look of the Redarc BMS but the price is out of the question. A unit which has caught my eye is the Victron:

                      http://www.victronenergy.com/battery...nd%20bmv-602s/

Anyone used one of these or have any other suggestions?

MK I looked at these when I did mine. They are pretty expensive and I didn't have room for the shunt to fit easily behind the unit so I opted for the Baintech dual voltage meter and forgot about the current.

Like the look of theNASA bm series
http://http://www.nasamarine.com/proddetail.php?prod=BMN-1_Battery NASA looks a lot easier to install than the victron which is what I was looking at to start with
Good display, only downside is I think it's just for one battery, not sure. Got a volt gauge installed that tells me what the alternator and start battery are doing so suits me fine. Power for the beer fridge is all I need to keep a good eye on. Gotta keep the essentials chilled

I remember when cars actually had volt meters on the dash not just a check light like now. Progress!

That NASA unit looks not too bad actually. Seems to have most of the info that I'd be after. If I were to get one and it only was for one battery, I would just link it to my aux battery because I hate warm beers :-)
