  • Is it too high?

I recently put Bilsteins and medium duty lifted Lovells colis in. When the fronts got put in, the circlip was set at the lowest setting. This only gave me 20mm lift at front and over 50mm at the rear. I didn't like this so had the circlip moved up 15mm to the top setting (3rd groove). This has now given me 50mm over standard. (Yes lifting it 15mm gave me an extra 30mm )

The guy that did it said to me afterwards, that it is now too high ! After my tirade about them not calling me before they went ahead if they had any doubts, I decided to see how it went for a couple of weeks. Aside from maybe needing a wheel alignment, I think it is sitting OK. I have 800-805mm on the rear and 790-795 on the front (16 inch rim) giving me 480mm clearance at the front of the side-step and 490mm at the rear.
I have an alloy bar and no winch, dual batteries or anything heavy. The ride is fine and handling seems fine too.

The boots aren't leaking grease, they are only touching a little bit. Am I going to run into problems if I stay this way? Has anyone else got their fronts up this height and is it too much?

hmmm... was going to attach photos but Board attachment limit has been reached. Will add later...

I don't know if it's too high or not as I'm not sure what the standard suspension measurements were when new. I bought mine secondhand with a lift already installed. Will go measure a bit later and let you know what the measurements are on my Prado.

      Hi Birdman,

as long as your CV boot is straight (horizontal) on level ground it isnt an issue. If the CV boot is slightly downward though, consider this as your height limit. If your CV is looking "dog legged" or a bit "zig zag" where it connects from the diff to the wheel it would be likely limit your downward travel and that you will be doing damage to your CVs, front diff, steering and suspension components. Lifting the front suspension has its limits unlike the rear where the skies the limit in some ways. There are a few ways to get around this although most are costly and not always functional. All IFS vehicles have their limits, if you go past these expect costly repairs in the long run. Your suspension with settle down after a few trips and you should consider remeasuring the height gained. You just might find it should drop somewhat,

      Zook.

David, have a read through this thread again: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=5048&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

Your front height is the same as mine.

Thanks for the heads up Glenn. You are right, your heights are the same, though you now have the circlp on the bottom setting. Those HD colis make a lot of difference don't they. I'm going to try the diff-drop first with washers as suggested, and if it makes the indicated difference, will look at getting a kit with tapered spacers and longer bolts to do it properly. My boots don't seem to be rubbing as much as yours were Glenn. I'll see how it goes for a while. I'm quite liking the look of it now that it sits a bit higher and level. It seems to make such a difference to the overall feel (perception maybe).

            Re: Is it too high?

The proof is in the driving; my vehicle has a lot more ground clearance compared to the standard setup & very rarely bottoms out. Have to be on some extreme tracks to do that which is way past me these days :!:

There's a mob in the states that makes those tapered diff drop spacers & I was considering ordering some but will just keep an eye on the CV boots for the time being. Using flat washers as a spacer does not make sense to me & I won't be doing it. As I said on that other thread, the aftermarket boots were no where as good as genuine......

            Cheers,
