  • Wiring for rear power socket for 60 Lt Engle combi

    Hey Guys,
I just purchased a new 60L engle combi for my Prado. I have dual batts installed and I was wondering if the standard fuses and wiring will be fine for me to pulg the Engle into. Also how long can expect to run the fridge on the batts with the car off, without risking flattening both batteries ? Sorry if this question had been asked previously but I couldnt find any similar posts. Here is some stats on the current draw. I am not too cluey with electrics so i though I would ask some of you guys on here.

Low DC Current Draw: 12V 4.5 Amps

    Input Voltage
    AC AC 185 ~ 264V, 50/60Hz
    DC DC 10.5 ~ 32V

    Rated Amperage
    AC AC 0.7A
    DC DC 12V 4.5A, 24V 2.3A

    Thanks Guys.

hey mossie check this link out viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2608&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=diy +fridge+socket this will show you how to do it. to answer ya questions the original socket has some pretty thin wire so i wouldnt trust it so i up graded mine as well, Running time on the battery will depend on how big it is eg how many Amp Hours, outside temp blah blah, ig got a waeco 60 running off a 105 a/h battery and it can run the fridge on a 30 deg day for 2 days without starting the car, without the error light comming on on the fridge/ thats with the fridge set on 2 deg. so for an engle 60 i would think about the same. cheers samo

I get about 2 days out of mine as well (40L engel) on the second battery, your current draw looks about the same as mine. Unless you have rewired the car the rear socket is linked to the accessories and so your fridge stops when you take the keys out.

Also, what sort of dual battery setup do you have? Most are volt controlled and will isolate the batteries from each other. So either

      1. you have standard wiring and assuming you leave your keys in the ignition then your standard battery will drain till flat but your aux battery will be ok as the solinoid will have isolated the batteries, so all you need to do is jump start yourself off the aux battery.

      2. You have rewired your rear plug to be always live from your aux battery in which case your starter battery is most likely ok to get you started.

      3. You have a non conventional dual battery system with out the isolating feature. In this case i you can flatten both batteries, and i would recommend getting an isolator and changing this. Red arc and projector are 2 common and simple examples.

      Make any sense?

You need at least 6mm twin red/balck wire direct from your battery to a heavy duy plug ( Hella or similar )

There are plenty of threads on here on how to do this.

i have a surepower isolator (arb) and the rear socket is wire up directly to the 2nd battery via a 20 amp fuse and 6mm twin core cable, so its live all the time. So that means i can flatten the 2nd battery and its isolated from the start battery. cheers samo

            Hey Guys,
Thanks for the info, I have an isolator on the dual batt setup as it was done by ARB. I am re-wiring the rear power socket with the 6mm cable to run off the Auxillary battery as you guys have suggested. Do you think its necessary to upgrade the power socket? I alos heard there are specific engle sockets you can get also. I dont really want to do that as it will prevent me for using it for anything else.

            Thanks for you input guys.

Re: Wiring for rear power socket for 60 Lt Engle combi

You haven't really specified what the power socket is now. If it is a standard cigarette lighter socket, it won't be satisfactory.

You need a Hella plug/socket. I'd recommend you drill a new hole in the plastic and install the Hella in addition to the current rear cig. light socket. Don't worry it'll look like it's supposed to be there.

Maybe read this good description ( except I would not run a short earth return to the body as he describes- run a black wire right back to the battery ) :

Re: Wiring for rear power socket for 60 Lt Engle combi

Maybe I have just been lucky, but with my past car (2004 GX) I retained the rear socket but rewired with 6mm cable via second battery. This was a work car used as a construction vehicle 6 days a week so the fridge was on practically all the time for a 3 year period, including over the pilbara summer where the fridge had to work against an ambient temp of up to 50 degrees. In 3 years with that car I never had a problem.

Why do others think that it is necessary to change out the socket?

The standard cigarette socket dosn't have any grip to it. A Hella socket will hold a plug in more firmly but I like the Engel socket that screws in. They are ALL vunerable to things knocking againts the plug to dislodge them it's just that some are more resistant to those knocks and vibrations than others.

Perhaps I am just pedantic, or maybe its because I spent too much time as a dodgy contractor arguing the difference between “need”, “want” and “fit for purpose”. But I do have a pet peev about people using the word “need” to freely.

Personally I have found that the standard cig lighter socket is not very reliable for fridges. I replace everything with Hella's. They handle more power, are smaller, have a better (more secure) connection. So with that in mind, I would classify the cig lighter as not "fit for purpose" for a fridge on an off road vehicle. I have also found that most plugs for cig lighters are of dubious quality.

The Fridge & Solar link above is a real gem, My favourite dual battery how to!

                        Mossie

Just leave the factory unit where it is and run a new wire socket arrangemenet. If you're not clued in / tooled up for wiring in your own then I'd purchase a ready made unit like the Waeco dual outlet unit I installed. It has the Hella and cigarette sockets plus an on/off engine detection capability.

It doesn't negate the need for a low voltage cutoff to save your battery but I'd be surprised if your fridge doesn't already have this. I know the newer Waeco units do.

If you need a hand / to look at one installed just give me a shout.
