    Hey guys

since the aussie dollar is pretty high at the moment, I was thinking about getting some US products, and was looking at the Sonoran Steel adjustable panhrad bar ($175.00USD), and some heavy duty lower control arms ($310.00USD) . Would it be a good deal after shipping or would it be better to get one made here.

    Hi Andy,

can you include a link, what site did you get this from. I thought the states dont sell Prados.

      Re: US products

I've bought stuff from Sonoran before, they're good blokes to deal with, and their gear is really well made.

The thing you have to be careful with is checking for likely customs charges when the parts arrive here, when I bought my suspension from Donahoe Racing (now Icon Vehicle Dynamics), I copped an extra $300 or so to release them from customs, over and above what I'd paid for the part + shipping.

So I'd suggest an e-mail to Steve to see what he can tell you, followed by one to a customs broker, just to make sure before you make the purchase. There is a chance that it won't require a charge at all, it changes too often to keep up with, unless you import regularly.

@ Zook, the US don't have Prado's, but the corresponding model of 4Runner has the same bits beneath the body http://www.sonoransteel.com

        Re: US products

Most of the Parts that are interchangable for the Prado are from the 4-Runner, FJ Cruiser, and Lexus GX 470. Your best bet is to look for aftermarket items for the FJ Cruiser because of lack of Off-road parts for the 4-R & GX 470.

If you have any questions about what would fit or not just ask. I have an FJ, knowlege of the Prado, and many US off-road contacts.

          Re: US products

Well I just remembered that I'm going to Canada next year. So I might get the parts shipped to my parents place then chuck them in the suitcase. I'm thinking about making my prado more into a tourer. So I might get the Dayster Bump stops, as the prado ones are very harsh, instead of the rear lower control arms. Also I've been trying to find some rear upper control arms as these are weak, and have had them break on me in the middle simpson then on the Gibb river rd.

I have already bought the diff drop kit from Sonaran Steel, which I ordered last time I was in Canada.

            Re: US products

Strangely enough, nobody seems to make aftermarket upper control arms for the rear, you can replace the bottom ones with heavy wall, chromoly, trussed, pivoting, etc, but you're stuck with those spindly little arms on top.

I was considering getting some flat bar welded to mine for gusseting, but I've lost the urge to challenge myself, so my prado only does soft-roading these days, making mods like that unnecessary.

              All-Pro Off-Road makes a set of upper links. http://www.allprooffroad.com/fjrearsuspension/271

Not much of a reason to add upper links to the Prado the stock ones are strong enough. The exception is to get more travel out of the rear suspention along with LTR shocks. The All-Pro's 'Johnny joints' will move more than the limiting bushings on the OEM, so the complete set of All-Pro with OME LTR's can give you a Meter of flex out of the rear suspention.

The reason for swaping out the lower links is because the OEM are weak and any bump or misplaced slide onto them cause them to bend easy

I've broken my upper control arms twice, and in very isolated parts of australia (Simpson desert and on the Gibb river rd). One end broke, which I got fixed, then the other end broke. I think it come down carrying heavy loads.

I don't really trust the upper control arms.

Wish they were available five years ago, lol, I did actually replace one of mine, it hadn't broken, but was showing obvious fatigue cracking around the welds on one end.

WOW! I actually had one break with LF&R when he came out for an event, but It finds out the end cracked and caused the bolt to back out.

Hell, if the dollar sinks any more you can just send over for a new 4-Runner & get it for half off.
