  • fog lights upgrade of globes?

getting use to the new rig, to me it seems a waste that the standard fog lights, should be brighter.
i understand what fog lights are for !!!!! but sacrificing that for a couple of brighter driving lights just
by changing the globes.. has anyone done this?

The problem is the lens and reflector is only designed for very short range but very wide spread so putting in higher wattage globes will gain you little except pissing off on coming drivers even more....

the prado stock light doesnt cut it for me, had a quick glance , will have a closer look tommorrow.. brett wrote :]

Re: fog lights upgrade of globes?

Well, I do find the fog lights useful for supplementing low beam fill & spread. We spend much of our time on busy highways on low beam and let's face it: (standard) low beam Prado lights are pathetic, especially at 100 km/h with a string of oncoming traffic or following other vehicles just too far away to benefit from their illumination. Unless there is a low beam bulb upgrade that will fix this I'll at least continue to use the standard foggies for this purpose as they don't seem to be too glarey for oncoming drivers (as driving light replacements for the fog lights would be).

prado headlights are very average. even my previous car, being an X-Trail, was heaps brighter etc etc.

you can upgrade the globes in the foglights, but i don't think its the globe or wattage thats the let down. the design and the shape is more for looks than practicality.
just put a round 100mm fog light with the same wattage next to the factory units and you will notice the difference staright away.

as for the low beams, try ARB and ask about the IPF 'fatboy' globes, they are still H4 so they will go straight into the headlights. better low beam.

I'm sure this was covered before and after much digging around I found this...

Check out page 5 of THIS thread:
              viewtopic.php?f=16&t=442&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=80

These "xenon" globes appear much brighter than the standard.

Re: fog lights upgrade of globes?

ended up splicing the fog light power and powering up the led's mounted 'em next to the fogs
killed two birds with the one stone...

the led's should have those roos pulling up before they jump the fence..
. and still utilising the fog switch
being directional that set up nice in the dark, pretty happy with the look too

next is the headlight globes, ill get back you ya later as got a lot more pradopoint posts to read

been under the rig again and rear fog lights are next!
Have decided to convert them to a brake lights, ripped one out and got it worked out , should be a easy
but yet effective mod. ( use of the light and reflector housing..) it will get the attention of other " prado " owners for
sure. eg. how come mine dont work lol, take care, till next post

p.s I will hit the local wreckers for the globe holders, and get the soldering iron and heat shrink out again
the light case is sealed at the back so can easily be shaped to take any globe holder.....sounds like a plan

I'd be careful about modifying the fog lamps to be brakelights, see this thread viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2802&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=40

                        Posted by Keepleft:

<snip>On modification of a rear fog lamp, and this applies to 'dummy' units; Do NOT wire the lamp unit for use as a 'general taillight', OR as a 'brake-light'. Doing so for the latter in particular can mean a technical defect under ADR 49/00 - 'in relation to photometrics' (of that brake lamp function). This is a seperate issue from the 'placement and mounting' requirements of brake-lights, which differs from that of rear fogs, and therefore on that basis could also mean a defect.

IF you are going to 'use' the dummy lamp, ensure that it is wired and used for its lens-compliance-marked (below) purpose, and therefore its 'designed intention' only. (ARR 217 applies in regards physical use of front and rear fog lamps).

You will likely find the dummy lamp is devoid of a hole used by a bulb holder. Here, you need to 'zero-point' its photometric centre. Often on the lens you will see a dot or similar. Zero-point (for a suited bulb holder) is also the middle of the round 'flat section' of the covering panel.

A rear fog lamp unit will bear COMPLIANCE MARKINGS on the lens, here, near an 'E mark', which is the letter E in a circle with a number next to it (Eg; E13), will be the designation; "F00", or "00". <snip>

You can order the bulb holder and wire from Toyota and fit them to the dummy foglamps
                        2 x 82214-60050 - Wire, Lamp - retails for about $20 each + 2x 12V21W T20 globes

Re:mod rear fog to brake lights

what if i convert them to brake lights, if there was a issue raised say at a vechile check station or evan
a rego check, with the legallity of the fog lights as brakes, i could have a couple of bayonet connectors to
disconnect the lights on the spot,,, would that save me a bluey or would they sting me anyway for doing it in
the first place? still keen on the mod. just gotta find away around it
another thought is it the fact that a fog light isnt a brake light thats the issue, or just red tape @8#%
as what if i mounted another "brake light" in the location the the existing fog light. therefore the light would
be used for its intended purpose? brake,

                              Re:convert R/FOG to Brake light

im gonna have buckleys finding a brake light of similar size and curvature.
next idea is to keep the lamp housing and replace the red lense.
it looks like the fog light throws the light downwards, which makes sense
, it could be easily removed and cut a another brake lense to suit, glue it to the housing
that way if the rta is that familiar with prados, or fog lights , they'll notice
the different lense, may suit the application better..... what do ya think?
like adrian said applying the globe holder is easy as..... am i on the right track here?
