  • Factory Anti theft System

    Hi There

I was bored in the weekend and decided to test my anti theft system. I've had the Prado for about 14 months and never tested it. Anyway, after following the instructions in the manual outlining how to test it, when I open the doors while the system is armed, nothing happens - no horns, no flashing lights - nothing :?

The theft deterrent light on the dash flashes away so I can only assume that the immobiliser works.

Has anyone else had this issue and is there an easy fix?

I've booked the Prado into the dealer next week to get it sorted (under warranty hopefully) but was hoping that there was a known easy fix out there amongst the PP community.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

Is it meant to do anything but immobilise the car? :?:

And the Grande takes about 20-30 seconds before it arms.

I had similar when I tested mine and didnt wait long enough.

I wonder how much toyota would want for the alarm module shouldn't be anymore then a 1/3 of the cost of a new car

            Re: Factory Anti theft System

i'm getting a local fella to do a 'factory upgrade' alarm system.

this is an add in module that does everything a full alarm system does. arm all doors, ultra-sonic motion detector as an additional option, also does bonnet. depending on the level of the module, you can get ones which auto wind up windows, or allows a warning chirp for unwanted interested parties passing etc etc. and also shock sensor.

anyway, the beauty about this add in module is that i can arm and disarm the car with the factory key. there won't be a need for an additional remote or key fob to dangle on the key ring. i just wanted to be able to use the unlock and lock on the factory key, but still be protected with a full alarm system.

Yep would like to hear feedback re this "factory upgrade" as the main stream lads are not interested in providing their advertised Australia wide installation in Alice  , I suppose we are not Australia wide here only the centre of Australia

I've just installed the Factory Anti Theft System.
My Prado is a 2008 GXL.

To do this I did an eBay search for the Control Module (89730) and found a second hand one from Lithuania !!! for 16.20 British Pounds+postage (~$AU30 plus $15 postage). Part number was Toyota Control Unit ECU 89730-60080 / 237000-2900. I believe 89730-60070 might also work but not sure.

With great difficulty I managed to just see the 40 pin (20 pins wide 2 rows) connector which is situated above the steering column between the column and the Radio and almost up to the base of the dash top.

You MUST disconnect the negative battery terminal as its not worth risking frying any of the cars electronics.

I managed to plug in the module, reconnected the negative battery terminal, and lo and behold it all worked perfectly as per the manual.
You'll need to reprogram the Radio with the 3 digit PIN number (mine was last 3 nos of VIN no).

I don't yet have a bonnet switch but one is being sent at the moment from Adelaide. You need to buy a complete bonnet catch WITH the switch and connector. It plugs into a socket under the top rail just behind the catch. Part on eBay is "Bonnet Latch - suits Toyota Prado fits - Lock ##J120 02-09 With/Imobiliser" Cost $119.70 new.

To fix the control module to the car if you look up in the region of the 40 pin connector you'll see a horizontal piece of metal with a M8 nut welded to it.
I screwed an M8, ~15 mm long, bolt from the underside as there's no way to get it started from the top. (Its meant to be screwed in from the top and screwed down tight with the control modules bracket)
This means the bolt now protrudes above the car bracket and you then hook on the control module's bracket, being careful to also set the small tag in a second hole on the bracket.
You will then spend 45 minutes getting a spring lock washer and an M8 nut onto the top of the bolt and then tightening it with a small spanner.

I'm guessing it could be easier if the Speedo/Tacho dash panels are removed but I didn't want to disturb all that and decided to install the module the quick way - which turned out to be difficult but definitely do-able.

I have found ALL the connectors already present in my car that are needed for the entire system, including a connector for the (it seems to be a standard single low current horn) Theft Horn T1 (single wire RHS in the engine bay by the mudguard and by the bottom of the air cleaner)
                  And
the battery backed Anti Theft Siren Assembly T11 (89040 which should also include the wiring with an ~ 8 pin connector and the Shrouding bracket, not the tag type bracket) which behind the RHS rear quarter panel about mid height and about 600mm from the back of the car behind all the plastic trim. Cost second hand ex Britain around $100

There is also a connector present at the front ceiling Courtesy Light (that has the Sun Glasses Holder, Part 89075) for an alarm version of the light incorporating ULTRASONIC Motion Detection and also a Microphone for Glass Breakage Detection!
Still looking for one of these.
As you can tell, upgrading your Prado 120 to having a complete factory alarm system is easy, not too expensive and quite do-able.

All you really need is the Control Module (89730) and the alarm picks any front or rear door or the back boot door being forced open, the battery being tampered with and attempts to start the engine without the key. The Hazard/Blinker Lights Flash and the twin horns sound.

You also need to enable the alarm system with the Toyota Techstream system (eg a $20 OBDII/USB Techstream cable plus software packages on eBay - 16 Pin Mini VCI TIS Techstream v8.10.021 For Toyota Single Cable And Software.)
Once the module at least is installed the Anti Theft is to be enabled then a range of options appear such as which sensors (like bonnet, glass breakage etc) and which horn and/or siren to enable and some other parameters I can't remember.
                  Enjoy

Thanks for the write up! I have a 2003 gxl so I’m unable to use the OBDII tech stream. If I just installed the ECU will this allow for the basic operation of the alarm or does the tech stream need to be enabled?

                    Thanks,

You must use the Techstream to enable the ECU Module. If you can't then maybe a dealer could. The module is only for the 120 series Prado.

                          Here's an update.
                          Alarm working fine.
New Bonnet Latch (with Theft Deterrent Switch) arrived and fitted - works well.
Self Powered Siren that fits in rear of car RHS Quarter Panel has arrived (actually I wound up with two). Can't get it to work. Techstream only sees Horn 1 (main twin horns) and Horn 2 (regular alarm horn that fits by air cleaner box). Doesn't see siren. Have tried alarming car, opening hood (alarm sounds) disconnect battery (Grrrr - have to reprogram Radio and phone nos AGAIN!) and all goes quiet when the siren should sound! Have checked all wiring and have opened siren units. The battery backup is Twin Lithium CR123A 3 volt cells for 6 Volts backup power (non-rechargeable). The Siren is Armed and Disarmed via digital signals from the Theft ECU - if the battery is disconnected or can bus wires cut siren should sound but doesn't. Both units are showing over 6 volts at battery backup so no problem there. It seems Australian Prados don't get siren capabilities (wiring Diagram says for Europe Only) in spite of the ECU I bought coming from Europe!
I have connected a small Alarm Siren to the Horn 2 Connector (single wire +12Volts when triggered) and it works fine. Only sounds when Horn 1 also sounds. No beep beep if key left in ignition or door ajar when trying to Lock/Arm. I guess worhwhile if main horn is vandalised before breaking into car - then again a crow bar levering up bonnet at RHS to access the horn 1 would let someone kill that too!
Happy I now have a working car alarm.
Waiting to see if I can source a Front Courtesy Light/Map light unit with the Ultrasonics and Microphone for in car Movement detection and Glass Breakage detection.
