  • Redarc BCDC-1220 20amp DC-DC 3 Stage Battery Charger Install

    Redarc have just released a new DC-DC 3 Stage 20 amp Charger. ( see photo 1 & 2)
    http://redarc.com.au/products-and-servi ... start-bcdc

The great thing about this unit is it will accect anything from 9 - 32v DC input.
The unit will work with a choice of three battery types - AGM/Gel, Calcium Calcium or Lead acid.
and uses a three stage charging process to charge the second battery.
    http://redarc.com.au/static/files/BCDC1 ... t-A5-1.pdf
And its Australian Designed and Built.

The compact size would make it great for the caravan or camper trailer, or for mounting to a portable battery box.

So I thought I would install one of these units into our 2006 Diesel Prado
    to charge our Aux battery.
The unit is fully sealed so it's fine to mount under the bonnet.
I used the Piranha Battery tray from TJM to mount the second battery. (see Photo 3)
Then installed the BCDC-1220 on the Drivers side inner guard, just above the ABS pump. (Photo 4,5&6)

Will report back in a couple of weeks to let you know how its performing.
But I already have the Redarc Battery Management system fitted to my camper Trailer and it uses the same 20amp DC-DC charger and it's great.

You can read about the redarc BMS and my camper trailer fitout here if your interested.

        Hi Rod,

I'll be very interested in your report, as it mounts under the bonnet it could be the way to go for me.

Re: Redarc BCDC-1220 20amp DC-DC 3 Stage Battery Charger Install

Well its been a few weeks and have been away for a week with the Redarc DC-DC 1220 installed
and I am Really happy with it. The unit has performed really well...

Firstly I am now running a 880CCA Calcium battery as my aux, so I was very keen to see how the unit performed charging the calcium Battery.

I ran our Engel fridge for two days, then went for a couple of hours drive. when I returned to camp the unit had reached the absorb charge stage.
I estimate we possible used about 40 -50 Ah's of power to run the fridge for the first couple of days (2.5 days). Another couple of days without driving then another couple of hours driving home and the unit was in float mode when I lifted the bonnet at home.

Anyway I put the volt / amp meter on it tonight, and grabbed a couple of shots of the input and output voltage and amps.

          Here they are...

Input Voltage Bulk charge mode - vehicle at idle

Thanks 01rod, that is really another interesting post. Adds another alternative to the dual battery setups we have here.

Congrat's on a very comprehensive report . How do you reckon it compares to a Ranox DC-DC ?
Unfortunately the Ranox is not weather proof so not suitable for under bonnet installs .
Hve you measured the input current to the DC-DC and do you know if it causes radio freq interference ?

              Cheers

                Hi Ross...

Sorry for taking so long to reply been away...

I did measure the input current when the unit was outputting 20.50amps in Bulk mode and it was drawing 23 - 24amps at the input side.

There is no Radio interference that I can find. UHF and AM/FM Radio all appear to be no different.
I have heard interference from "other" brands of these dc-dc converters so it was also something I was very aware of.
But happy to report no such issues for me....

                  Hi Ross

Can't really comment on the Ranox as I havent compared the two side by side.
But am happy to offer my thoughts as to why I choose the Redarc...

                  1. Redarc 1220 is a Sealed Unit so it can be mounted under the bonnet
                  2. Australian designed and Built
                  3. Suitable for different battery types - AGM/GEL - Lead acid - Calcium content
                  4. Calcium content batteries - Most automotive batteries have calcium content these days. Calcium Calcium batteries require a higher charger rate to charge them to 100% 15.50volts.

                  5. Multistage Charging process
                  6. Easy to install and set up - set and forget
                  7. 2 Year Warranty
                  8. Manufactured under quality control
                  9. Redarc appears to be more power efficient

Other factors are that we have been using Redarc products on our work vehicles for years (over 150 vehicles). Very good quality have rarely ever had a failure.
I also have the Redarc BMS (Battery Management System) fitted to my camper trailer and its just brilliant.

                  Hope this helps

                    All

Anyone know wherer I can source one of these in Perth? One battery place I rang told me I was talking crap that I needed a such a device and just use the new Redarc isolator with adjusted cut in/out voltages. They said it was the amps that were more important than the volts. Hmmm, don't think I will shop there. They were actually very rude when I tried to debate their reasoning.
