  • MP3 PLUG IN ACCESS in 08 GRANDE

Hello all, new to forum and i say hello to all and have found a wealth of good info even before joining Prado Point as a member. I know i should probably be in the electrical forum but perhaps i can use this as an ice breaker!
The one thing which i am still struggling with in my Prado is the head unit telling me to plug in an aux cable for my MP3 ,but no inlet available! my previous GXL had an inlet plug but can not find one on the Grande ...any ideas? >>>still waiting on the correct user manual to arrive for the sat nav and audio system as the incorrect one was supplied.PS have fitted an amp and sub to vehicle and have wiring colour codes and locations for anybody whom needs them.

It's in the glove box - open the glove box up and there on the right hand side is a stereo jack type input with a plastic cover over it.

I'm still trying to work out how to get my wife's iPhone working through it - an assistant at JB Hifi advised me to get a cable to go from the headphone output of the unit into this socket in the car but that would mean opening the glove box and fiddling with the phone to change tracks :? - so I didn't get that.

I'm sure there must be a way of connecting an iPod (and hopefully an iPhone) to allow control of the device through the Aux controls through the head unit/steering wheel - my only concern being the fact that there's likely to be some kind of proprietary device or cable involved that will cost as much as another MP3 player

I have an 08 Grande and the correct manual, I'm happy to go through the manual tonight and see what it can do.

Re: MP3 PLUG IN ACCESS in 08 GRANDE

            Well...that was a little dissapointing....

...according to the AV Owners Manual (for the OPTITRON unit) the AUX connection is so you can connect (generic) digital audio players and 'quote' 'enjoy music'

'devices are connected to a stereo mini-jack (which it claims is 'located around the instruments panel' - whatever that means as it's in the glove box

They have a screen dump showing something connected to the AUX input and the text 'AUX unit is in play mode' and the last comment they make on this subject is that to '...operate the external input unit to play music' (presumably it's not capable of playing 'spoken word' ? Which kind of makes the plug in the glovebox a bit annoying really - you set the device in play mode (with enought battery to last the trip) and hit the AUX button and just listen to it - you have to control through the device not the head unit. Bit poor....not sure what I was expecting though since the stereo mini-jack is an audio only interface isn't it - you'd need a digital connection (and recognition of the device protocol) to control the remote unit (e.g. iPod) through the head unit.

 Yer , have not played with it yet until the cook arrives home but if we can atleast plug the ipod into it that would be a start, failing that we may have to remain playing thru our N96 or cig adapter // work in progress

Re: MP3 PLUG IN ACCESS in 08 GRANDE

Well, I plugged an iPod in using a Belkin connector cable from the headphone socket into the AUX plug in the glovebox and was able to select the AUX function and play music from the iPod. It is clear that this unit is not designed to control the iPod or standard MP3 player and the only controls that work are the volume controls. Selecting the next or previous track does nothing as expected.

The manual page (Page 122) for the AUX function is embarrassingly short and contains almost no useful information. I have reproduced the text here:
                  - AUX

You can connect digital audio players and other devices to the system and enjoy music.

                  Connecting External Devices

                  1. Devices are connected to a stereo mini-jack

The Stereo Mini-jack is located around the instrument panel

                  2. Push the "DISC - AUX" button to display the "AUX" screen

<<Screen capture of the AUX screen>>

                  3. Operate the external input unit to play music.
The screen capture displays a single line that says "AUX unit is in play mode", the only buttons are for sound volumes and the DSP settings, which are the same as the CD and Radio.

That's all the information from the manual.

 Thanks for your input guys, maybe that part of Japan is not up to speed with the techno advances or perhaps it will leave room for an upgrade in the new model. Apparently similar units have been fitted for about 7 years with minor upgrades every so often.

Re: MP3 PLUG IN ACCESS in 08 GRANDE

If you want to get device control for an iPod/iPhone for music through the head unit you need to use something like a SoundLinQ SL2i (for Toyota/Lexus). It's a 'module' that plugs the iPod into the CD Changer input on the back of the head unit of the Sat Nav equipped Grande (with the 'Optitron' head unit). It is however over $300 AUD.

Ironically - it looks like some of those cheap after market head units have far more capability in this regard: some even support the streaming of music over Bluetooth protocol A2DP.
