  • Headlight adjustment

I have done a search but can't find a full answer. How do adjust the headlights down? The handbook says contact Toyota :?: and the search says 2 adjusters on back of lights but which one is which?????? To get the lights to be lower do I fiddle with the adjustments nearest the radiator or those outboard nearer the mudguard? I have moved each of them a few quarter turns but nothing is happening! Lots of turns needed? Recent suspension lift raised the front more than the back hence the need to lower the lights [which were too high anyway]. Thanks, Neil

    Re: Headlight adjustment

Off the top of my head I'm not sure which one is which but you do have to turn them quite a bit. Do it with the lights switched on and fairly close to a wall (that way the light beam will have a sharper and more obvious edge) and it'll become quite clear which adjuster does which.

    Cheers.

using a long phillips head screw driver, adjust the lower (of the 2 adjusters) for up/down movement.

        Re: Headlight adjustment

I have been looking for a repair manual so I can find the little things like this. My headlights were way too high fro the factory floor too, so at 5,000 service I had them take them down a little. Now I think they are too low and want to lift a little. If anyone can supply a photo of the correct screws to turn, I'll take it from there.. I would guess the ones with the serated washers are the ones, but I want to go up and out, so which way to turn them?

          Re: Headlight adjustment

The bottom ones do up and down and you have to turn them a long way to get much action-park close to a wall or similar and turn it left [I think] to raise the lights and right[I think again] to lower. I parked about 1m from the garage door and lowered them by about 50mm and this made a big difference on road-you will have to go up about 50mm on the wall to raise your lights. The inner ones near the radiator I assume are the left-right adjustment. Adjust the up-down first. On mine the adjuster was an 8 or 10 mm hex nut. Neil

            Re: Headlight adjustment

I always thought rather than just randomly adjusting screws to get the level right that You adjusted high beam to be pointing dead ahead (using a wall and measuring where they should be pointed) and then the low beam should be in the right spot?

              Re: Headlight adjustment

Correct me if I'm wrong. The high beam should be 900mm from the floor.

I have a line going across the garage wall at 900mm. This way its easier to get the correct height. Thats how I did the spotties.

              Hope this helps.

I am sure it has to do with the height of the vehicle's headlight as to how high you mark the wall as well as adjusting them from a certain distance away from the wall . There is certain measurements and I am sure if there is an auto sparky or mechaninc reading this will know the measurements but 900mm may be correct height for dusties but may not be correct for other vehicles as differnt vehicles with different mods stand different heights .

I've had a look around the reaer of the lights but the adjusting screws aren't obvious ( or I'm blind :? )
I need to adjust mine after the lift too.

I'll get some photos tonight and post up, but the adjusting nuts are the ones with the gnarly looking washer.... Looks like they have teeth.....
10mm socket or spanner, park the car close to a wall so you can see if you're turning the nut the right way, remember, less is more......
I did mine the other night, used the garage roller door as a marker, adjusted almost a full notch on the roller door.... from a distance of about 1meter...

Just dragging up an old thread here to get some info on adjusting the lights. Did anyone manage to get some photos of the adjusting screws? I have found some on the outboard side of the lights but have turned and turned with no apparent luck.

Here are the two from the passenger side, they need to be turned LOTS before they have an effect.
The drivers side ones are harder to photograph now as the second battery is in..

Thanks very much MDSimpson. I assume that the upper one does the up/down and the other one does side to side. Now to figure out which way to turn. $100 I go the wrong way first time!!
