  • Speedo Calibrator - will it work?

    I came across this speedometer calibrator earlier while browsing for something complete different.

    http://www.hummingbirdelectronics.com.a ... rator.html

    Cost is $92.50.

    As my speedo reads under by about 5% at 100km/h due to the BFG's it would be a worthwhile investment for me. I have always been told that the cost of re-calibrating my speedo would be completely inhibitive (and I'm not a big fan of building my own kit from Jaycar or similar) so never really looked into the matter, but I think that price is pretty resonable.

    The units say they work with both hall-effect and inductive speed sensors - but I wouldn't know if they 120 uses either of these. Can anybody confirm the type of sensor used and if these units would work?

    For 92$ that is at least a try and does not look to hard to install. Might have to try it when I change my tires. I would go for it.

      Have you asked Hummingbird? They probably know if it will work...

        Yep, sent Hummingbird an email just before posting above - thought I would ask here in case they ask what type of speed sensor the 120 uses

        I'll post any response I get from them.

          Does it comply with the ADR?

            Re: Speedo Calibrator - will it work?

            I have tried putting a marks adapter in and it was unsuccessful as the computer has 2 inputs to it. 1 from the gearbox and the other from the ABS.
            Unless you install it after the computer.

              Clearly they're fans of the 120!

              Craig: It's interesting knowing that the Marks Adaptor didn't work. I can't find an install manual for these so it would be interesting to know if it installs in a similar fashion to the HUmmingbird product.

              Schaffer: Not too sure about the ADR, but at the moment those of us with pre-2005 120's running larger tyres find that our speedo's under read. Here's hoping the Hummingbird product will make the speedo comply again.

                None of the others on the market to date have worked, so its up to someone to buy one of these and see how it goes I guess!

                  Well I've got a 2006 120 with 70 series tyres and my speedo no longer reads true but it's not a real issue to me at all. I always run the GPS and pretty muchj use that as a speedo rather than the actual and have done so from before the 70s. At 110 on the speedo the GPS is 113ish. With the older 65s it was spot on.
                  If this works then I would possibly look at it. I've heard of Hummingbird as my Father In Law as a Hummingbird 25 (I think) on his boat

                  JGD, since you have been in contact with them and they state they believe it will work for you offer them to test it out and see how it goes. Let them know you will post comments here and maybe get some more sales. You might get something from it :wink:

                    If it works I would be getting one, I imagine they would pick up a fairly large number of sales from this site alone.

                      Re: Speedo Calibrator - will it work?

                      Ok... I've done a little reasearch and at this stage can't see why this wouldn't work on a Prado. Looking at the wiring diagram for my Prado (1kz/ manual) it all looks pretty straight forward.

                      I'd say there has been some confusion in the past because the Prado has three speed sensors... one for the ECU, one for the ABS/VSC and on for the combination meter (Instrument cluster)

                      The one for the speedo (combination meter) is S2 on the side of the transfer case/gear box. It's a flat 3 pin Black connector with (In the case of my GXL, 1kz, manual) the following wire configuration (Which needs to be confirmed!!!!! with a multimeter :!: )

                      Brown = Earth
                      Gray = 12 volt supply
                      Green = Signal (pulse) out.

                      Beware the colours change for different years/models/drive train combinations :!: :!: and need to be confirmed for your model :!:

                        BTW...I'm led to believe that three wire speed senders are all Hall effect ones....

                            Be interested to see how it goes Mick.

                            I need to fit a terratrip to mine as well so need to correct the speedo pulse for this or fit a wheel probe. Be very interesting to see the outcome.
