  • I've changed from Dobinson to King Springs

Well on the front at least. We just did a couple of weeks up in the Pilbara, travelling through Rudall River and Carawine Gorge but on the way home the front diff started to leak oil like a bastard again. The whole bottom of the vehicle was covered in oil along with the back door and the camper trailer, not to mention the unmistakable diff oil smell. I'd previously had problems with the passenger side drive shaft seemingly disconnecting itself and sliding in and out of the diff housing causing leaks and a lot of angst (not to mention $$ in repairs). I had to drive from Newman to Perth (approx 1200kms) stopping every 100kms to check the rate of leakage and top up as required.

I had Dobinson springs fitted about 3 years ago and they raised the vehicle nearly 4 inches. This saw the CVs end up at an awful angle and meant that the boots were constantly rubbing on themselves resulting in the need to have them changed as well.

On our return it was off to the mechanic who suggested the angle of of CV drive shaft was placing too much strain on the snap ring holding the shaft into the diff housing. So it was out with the Dobinsons on the front and in with King Springs. Now the CVs are virtually level and the ride does feel quite a bit smoother/softer. The slight vibration I used to feel when accelerating also seems to have disappeared. The front has now dropped 35mm (down from 800mm to 765mm) and the vehicle is no longer higher in the front than the rear. Hopefully things will be a bit more level when the camper trailer is attached as well (see attached).

I'm hoping thats the end of my problems. :?

    [Edit]
Heres a couple of pictures showing the angle of the CVs with the Dobinson springs.

Note the distortion to the boot in this one

And heres the new angle with the King Springs

Thanks for the report and the great pics there Rainman,I'v been wondering about a bit more lift in the front end over 2"from standard, but after seeing the pics and hearing about your grief with the diff and CV's I'l be sticking with the 2"that i'v got already.
    Cheers Teza.

Hi Fellas. I changed from Kings to Dobi's a while back on my KZJ95R for the reason that the Kings were too low (read - coils binding). The first set of Dobi's had the front sitting too high so I had the dealer get me some front springs for the 3.4 V6 which were shorter. They were perfect. They have been on a year now and have done around 40,000 km and the Prado is still sitting at a nice 2" lift all round with the front CV's at a good attitude. Am very happy with the modification.

I was considering a diff drop but I could have sworn I found some info about potential problems, but buggered if I can find it again or even remember what the problems were.

When my mechanic changed the springs he commented that the Dobinsons were real b@stards to compress and that they really did belong in a truck and not a 4wd. The entire family noticed the change in the ride straight away - much more subtle.

Anyway, I was thinking of changing the rear springs and adding Polyairs for the camper but I now own two teenagers so I'm permanently broke and it seems that my interests are now of little consequence to anyone anymore.

Re: I've changed from Dobinson to King Springs

i found my front inner CV boots have split since putting bigger springs in. How are you measuring your height ?, from the bottom of the rim to the lip of the gaurd? i;m getting a measurement of roughly 810 taking into account half an inch less because i have 17 inch rims, but then if you have 15's my measurement in comparison to yours is 795. but my CV angle looks nowhere near as dramatic as what you have in your pictures. I have the kings 50mm lifted fronts but HD's

that pic just shows the busted boot, hmm cv angle doesn't look great there.
