  • cranking battery acid spill

have noticed a wet patch around one of the filler/vent caps on my cranking battery - original toyota battery.
Closer inspection reveals that the mechanic that serviced the car last has used a rattle gun or cordless drill to undo the caps. The caps, which is phillips is total burred out. He has obviously topped up the fluid to much aswell.
My issue is that there is a trail of acid on the battery tray and on the front fender, All these surfaces are painted so now the paint has oxidized and bare metal is left.

Warranty issue maybe but batteries are only covered for 12 months,,,,what about faulty workmanship, Only ever been serviced at toyota.
I have a 60k service due soon and will pursue it then. They'll probably say that my dual battery system has caused the battery to boil, or some other lame excuse.

    original toyota battery
It's a maintence free battery so they'd want to have a good excuse for dicking with it.... I haven't touched mine since new except for a quick visual check at service time and the odd CCA test.

I was told mine is a Calcium Battery by the fella who runs Red Earth Adventures and drives Prado. My understanding, like Micks comment, is these are a maintenance free battery.

        Re: cranking battery acid spill

A couple of years ago, I was travelling back from the Canning and had my Prado serviced at Kittle Toyota in Alice Springs. At the Henbury Craters I noticed fluid coming out of the dual batteries. It turned out someone had overfilled the batteries during the service. It ended up peeling the paint beneath both batteries, eating any plastic including the radiator drain plug. I contacted the Service Manager and it was followed up by the NT Toyota Service Manager. A claim was submitted through Kittle's Insurance and the car was repaired. The cost was over $2000. Kittles did a good job of looking after me. My Local Toyota Service Manager took more than litre of acid out of the main battery to restore it to the correct level.

          Re: cranking battery acid spill

Yesterday arvo, on our way out to a NYE party, I noticed the Prado was a bit underpowered, and handling differently. So once we returned home, I had a look in the engine bay and saw that the battery had 'sprayed' some of it's contents over the surrounding area. I don't know how long it has been like this, but anywhere the acid had been, was scarred.

I disconnected and removed the battery, flushed the area with water, then caked on a mix of Bicarb Soda and water to neutralise the acid. I flushed that all away this morning, and it all looks pretty sad.

I had the car serviced at the end of October. Looking at the battery, the fluid level is way above the 'high tide' marker. I can only think that the guy who serviced it last has put too much water in the battery.
