  • Incar enterainment system - thoughts

    Howdy all,

first of all THANKS to everyone who posts here - has been a great help for things such as stereo, air compression, camera installations.... BIG THANKS.

Basically, want to know if anyone has done something similar....

Currently I have a Kenwood DDX 7039 installed. I am about to get 2 headrest monitors (have read about the roof one - thanks for recent article MUMSRIG, but have 2 kids atm and thought headrest is better?) but am also thinking of getting a ASUS EEE 710 also (sold state laptop).

Would have that under one of the seats, and being a solid state laptop would be able to run applications on it such as MAME for gaming and also GPS apps. Would have that connected to the Head Unit, and the 2 monitors also, as well as 3 IR controllers... meaning could play Gauntlet and things like that with 3 or more players.

Has anyone set up anything like this before? I know some of the Head Rests have games within it, but could not imagine they would be as good as what MAME offers.

Just out for some advice before I go pulling my car apart... again.

    Thanks

    Nick.

Re: Incar enterainment system - thoughts

I have a 701 eeepc and looked into using it in car.

    There were 2 main problems...
    1. Remotely switching it on and off. Also i don't think the eeepc can switched on with the lid closed. So under seat is a problem.
    2. My eee only has VGA output. I'm not sure what inputs your Kenwood has but i'm not aware of any brand name stereo gear with VGA in. You can convert vga to component but you'd need some sort of VGA transcoder. I thought these were expensive and not really worth it. Another option was USB video card with TV out but again not worth it.

Although the eeepc is a nice little package i think you are better off using an ITX or mini ITX motherboard, case, and power supply designed for car use. You can get these in small cases not much bigger than a CD. You can get them with TV and VGA out plus it'll no doubt have more power than the eeepc. You can also connect a remote on/off switch on the dash.

With any solution if you use TV out the quality will suffer as computer res is much higher than tv out can handle. Movies and games (especially old arcade like MAME) are fine but fine text and icons become blurry. Lilliput have a range of head units and screens designed for carpc's with VGA inputs.

Since i already had an Eclipse head unit with normal A/V inputs and no VGA i decided against a car pc. Instead i use my phone a N95 8GB with GPS & TV OUT mounted and wired through the dash. It outputs my GPS (Garmin XT) with various topographic maps for on and off road navigation. It is a Symbian operating system so there is a heap of apps available. One of my favorites is the Inclinometer so i can see the crazy angles i'm at when 4wding. I also use a divx media box for movies and mp3s ect. The phone also supports movies and music but it is slow transferring them and it only holds 8GB.
