  • Instructions to install aftermarket Head Unit

    I am back!

Having sold my 2005 5 Door VX, then my 1997 SWB manual VX, and finally my 2001 LWB Auto VX, I am now back in with a 2007 auto SWB. Similar to the problem I had with my 2005, I would LOVE to replace the Head Unit and rear speakers on this car but have yet to find instructions on how to do it. I am fairly handy, but one issue I have is how to replace the OEM unit, which has a very large housing which needs a kit of some kind to be able to fit a Double Din unit. Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards.

    Howdy,

there are a group of us, me included that have put in the Kenwood 7039 double din or somethign similar.

Have a search - there is an old thread with all the pics and the wiring loom that was bought from a cheap auto shop to avoid cutting the original plug. The post is step by step to remove all trims etc.

    Should be a start.

Thanks McBain, very useful info. The only thing I am unsure about is the treatment for the gaps between the OEM and the aftermarket unit. I will need to order the faceplate to accommodate a Double DIN unit where is my OEM sits flush with the center module. Which OEM units have both MP3 and come with Green Display? I might just go that route if it fits the open slot perfectly and then just upgrade the speakers.

        Cheers.

You could try places like Tonkins Car Audio for the blanking plates. I went there with the intention of replacing my stereo with a 7" screen and asked if they had 'blanking plates'. The chaps there basically give them away as they have 'thousands' lying around(their words not mine).

page 3 of the thread in that link goes through the parts for filling the gaps, including part numbers from toyota (they come off an echo)

Re: Instructions to install aftermarket Head Unit

McBain, you are my hero  this is exactly what I have been looking for and I cant believe that it is an actual Toyota part number.

I have just finished replacing the entire center stack with one that looks like yours which accommodates a Double Din unit, however, the gaps look horrible. I am taking the part numbers you had provided to Toyota today, if they can order them, I am gonna get me a nice head unit, not necessarily with Navigation given that the roads here change almost daily here, but something definitely better than OEM and would allow me to use a single CD to listen to lots of music instead of carrying10 to 20 CDs as I do now.

                Cheers.

Yes I have, a good option to consider. I am not in need of either DVD or GPS, although I would not mind a unit that could read MP3 files that were burnt on a DVD disc.

Re: Instructions to install aftermarket Head Unit

Hi again, almost done, have the fillers. I read through McBain's instructions one more time and I could see that he wedged the "fillers" between the new HU and the metal frame that attaches to the car. I will need longer screws to ensure that the side fillers do not move when I hit bumps and such.

Given McBain's vast knowledge about parts, would he or anyone have the part numbers for the longer screws to attache the stereo to the metal frame? That is the final piece of the puzzle for me before I go shopping for a unit tomorrow afternoon. Given the recent price drops, I may be going for the JVC AVX710 http://www.testfreaks.com/car-audio-vid ... kw-avx710/

I look forward to seeing if you have part numbers for the longer screws.

                      Cheers.

Re: Instructions to install aftermarket Head Unit

I am stuck, there are four plugs going into the OEM unit but only 2 coming out of the aftermarket DVD receiver

Doe anyone know what the extra two are for and whether I need to hook them to anything? i also need to hook up a cable to the handbrake wire? any ideas how to do that without starting a fire.

                        Thanks.

Re: Instructions to install aftermarket Head Unit

The unit I bought and installed is the JVC AVX710.

All wires were hooked up to the corresponding wires in the car, the two other plugs that go into the unit were ignored since there no wires that go into them. I am very disappointed that after attempting to turn on the unit, I have nothing, nada, not even a blip! I made sure that the big plugs that houses all of the cables for everything around the stereo was installed too.

                          More questions:

                          1) Is the green cable that should be hooked up to the handbrake light mandatory for the unit to start? Can I trick the unit by hooking this up to another spot/cable in the car?

                          2) Do all the other plugs have to be installed (for the compass, AC, accessories, etc.) for the stereo to operate? I can't do that just to try out the stereo to find out it still does not work!

                          Any suggestions?

Partial success at last. Turns out that you have to properly install the master plug where all the wires go in securely. Still struggling with the wire to the handbrake light? Does anyone know of a good location to tap into? Cheers.

I earthed the handbrake cable to the side of the head unit so it will always power on, even when you are driving... And i had the same problem as you with the master plug... scratched my head for about an hour trying to work out why there was no power..
