  • Driving lights - ARB Deluxe Bar -long term robustness

I've got an ARB Deluxe bar being fitted ( GLX D-4D) next week and want to get some driving lights on to it asap to improve the hi beam performance of the Prado.

I've looked through all the threads on the various main spotlight choices ( Lightforce, Roo Lite, Narva, Hella, IPF etc ) There's a lot about how far they penetrate, beam width etc but but there's not a lot of info on their long term robustness on an ARB Deluxe bar. You can have the most powerful/long distance light in the world, but it's not much good if it keeps breaking it's mounts or pointing to the sky/ground.

I have spoken off-forum to a couple of Prado owners, who have had difficulties keeping some brands ( particularly the Lightforce and Roo Lights ) in alignment on this bar. ( mountings become loose )

Mining the vast experience of this forum I'd like to hear opinions on which lights have had the greatest structural success and long term "survivability", particularly on the ARB Deluxe Bar.
    Brand/model ?
    When fitted ?
No. of times had to readjust/repair/replace ?
Any other issues ? ( eg water getting in )
    Cheers, Wayne

Re: Driving lights - ARB Deluxe Bar -long term robustness

I have the ipf 900 (i think) on the delux bar. They are 3 years old and going strong. Never had a problem or needed adjustment. If you want i can take a pic tomorrow and post what they look like when sitting on the delux bar.

As a comparison, I have the lightforce striker 170's on our other car and they are good to (easy to get the water out and only need adjusting after hitting something), but in my experience the ipf have a better light spread. One of the best things you can do is throw away wiring loom and wire it yourself with thicker guage wire. I did mine with some 6mm that i had left over from wiring in the fridge and i think that it made the lights twice as bright.

      Cheers,

      Will

Lightforce 170's on a TJM bar, but they annoyed me until I set them and tightened them up. Been only joy since then. Been on just over 12 months now and have even caught out a couple doing, um, naughty things...

Hella Rallaye 4000, one pencil and one spread.

Had them on my 90 series for about 6-7 years and now they are on my ARB bar on the 120. Previous Hellas broke the mounts from continuous rattling along dirt roads.

Lost one adjusting nut. Have removed all nuts/screws etc and used thread lock. Never lost anything else, never lost a bulb. Have cracked a couple of the clear lens covers but you expect that.

These have survived well because of the solid mounting system that they use. Mine have been EVERYWHERE.

I have a set of IPF 800 on mine. Once they are set up properly and tightened no need to touch.

I also had a previous set of these lights on my 60 series for ten years and no problems, they just started to rust out by the end. Not too bad considering the amount of mud and water they went through.

Re: Driving lights - ARB Deluxe Bar -long term robustness

Thanks for the responses ... getting a good comparison from these.

Been checking out lights at the auto places.
Took a look at the Roo Lites and Lightforce in Autobarn today ( they stock both but I'd not buy them from there, way too dear !)
Lightforce 240s just on $400 a pair and the equivalent sized Roo Lites about 20 bucks cheaper
Both have the different lens cover you can put over top for wide/pencil beam and blue colour etc.

Repco wanted $450 for a pair of Narva 225s

Personally i can't see $400 in a couple of bits bit of plastic moulding, a reflector and a bulb, but am I being too harsh ?
                    Cheers, Wayne

Brand/model ? Hella Predator's High Boost HID Lamps

                        When fitted ? 6-Months

My Fathers had his for over 5 years on five 100 series Land Cruises, does abour 80,000km a year No Issues out last the car every time

No. of times had to readjust/repair/replace ? None

                        Any other issues ? None

These are ducks guts of lights, Had a previous set of Ralley 4000 with 50W HID Kit but they don't come close to the quality of light produced by the Predators, then again you have to pay for them? I have mine fitted with two lock nuts and spring washers on a plastic wedge this stops rotation, Dads are the same, no problems at all.

Re: Driving lights - ARB Deluxe Bar -long term robustness

Narva 225's converted to 55W HID owned for about six months and 15,000 km's

For: brilliant light as far as you can possibly see - really does turn night into day

Against: OK for road use, fiddly to get them exactly set up correctly, they vibrate loose over bumpy ground and don't seal very well between the lens and body

Summary: in future I'll upgrade to LightForce or IPF (I think)
