  • Battery under Passenger Seat?

    Hi all,

I have been thinking about a Dual battery solution that Battery World mentioned where a 105Ah battery is installed under the front Passengers seat. The battery needed to fit such an installation is the Remco RM12-105FT AGM battery. Go here to see it ( http://www.remco.com.hk/e/default_home.asp ) You'll have to use the product search at the top of their page.
These batteries are flat and similar to a small brief case in appearance.

Anyway, was just wondering what everyone's opinion was on this idea. Originally was thinking something along the lines of a Piranha tray and 75Ah battery. However the guard cracking possibility is bothering me a bit. 75Ah batteries start at around the 22Kg mark and go up from there. To match the battery solution/capacity mentioned above I'd need to be prepared to sit around 32Kg's on the right front guard. I spoke to Piranha today and they said 22kg is absolute MAX weight for their tray (As per Exide ED5 they recommend).

    Anyway - Discussions = Go !

    Thanx.
P.S - The 105FT is expensive !! but lets ignore those details and focus on technicals.

Will a 105AH Battery FIT under the seat? Never tried but I do know that the things I tend to put under the seat need to be small. I have a 115Ah battery up front, not in a Pirahna tray and it's height is listed as 238mm. Not sure if that includes the posts. The same brand 105Ah is the same height. You should check if you have that clearance plus about another 10-20mm above that.

Australian 4WD Action Issue 133 (it's a very recent one with the ute of the year 2009 comp inside)

Page 205 details this install in a four door Wrangler, the folks who did this were

Chris and Luke at Battery World Brookvale (02) 9939 2439

I'm thinking of doing something very similar..................

Not a bad idea if it will fit.

Not all AGM batteries like to be operated in the horizontal position, so it would be best to check before you fork out the money.

Battery would need to be secure so as not to slide around and the terminals well insulated.
Battery is a bit further from the alternator than a traditional installation so cable size should be increased.

One important note, that you might like to research further is charging and discharging a battery in a confined space. An engine bay is will ventilated, especially at 110 kph  . Batteries discharge gas when charged and discharged and this may cause a problem inside the cabin.

          Re: Battery under Passenger Seat?

          Hi tkstrong,

What makes you think the floor is less likely to crack?

Looking at the specs it looks like the battery is intended to stand upright, might
          be worth checking.

The other concern is the specs state suited for Telecoms and UPS, Telecoms and UPS batteries are
designed to be floated and not cycled. Cycling reduces their life considerably. They would not be designed
for rough treatment either, haven't seen any telephone exchanges in a 4x4  Again would be wise to check
with the manufacturer as to your intended use.

          Cheers
