  • Battery Restraints - ADR requirements ?

    Does anyone in Pradopoint land know if there are any particular ADR requirements for the Battery restraint / clamping mechanism ?

    I am currently building a set of draws that will include space for 2 x Aux batteries behind the second row seats. Space and access restrictions would mean the use of a traditional battery clamp will be a PITA to fit and remove, so I have been thinking of possibly using some type of tie down strap arrangement (fabric strap).
    I don't think there is any particular requirement for a traditional steel threaded bar type clamp, as all of the battery in boot / cabin installations that I can recall seeing have just had the battery sitting in a plastic battery box that is bolted to the floor and the box lid held on by a fabric strap.

    I've had several cars with rear mounted batteries. All of them had solid screwed in mounting hardware and venting to outside.

    IMHO, If you go with AGM the venting is not necessary, but they will need some kind of restraint, ADR or no.

      Michael,

      the batteries are AGM so there is no venting issues and I will definately have a securing device, I just wanted to make sure there was no particular design requirements for the restraint - other than being able to restrain the battery of course.

        Re: Battery Restraints - ADR requirements ?

        I got this info from Regency Park (South Autralia's vehicle standards dept)

        It may or may not be helpfull :wink:

        Battery Restraint
        Batteries must be fixed in position so that they will not easily break
        free in a crash and thus create a hazard to the driver, passengers or other road users. The
        battery restraint system must adequately withstand at least the following crash accelerations:
        Front impact – 20 g (i.e. 20 times the battery weight);
        Side impact – 15 g;
        Rear impact – 10 g;
        Vertical (rollover) impact – 10 g.

        Containment of Wet Cell Batteries
        All batteries that contain liquid or give off gases, including batteries powering ancillary
        equipment, must be effectively sealed off from the vehicle interior so that any gas or spilled
        liquid cannot leak into the vehicle. The batteries must be either fully enclosed in a sealed
        compartment (or compartments) or must be individually sealed and externally vented.
        Battery compartments must be constructed of corrosion resistant material or be fully lined with
        a durable corrosion resistant material, or coating, that will not shrink or crack under the
        vibrations and temperatures likely to be encountered in a motor vehicle.
        Battery compartment seals must be made of a corrosion resistant non-porous material (open
        cell foam is unacceptable).
        Except for any ducting used for ventilation, all battery compartment exterior openings or fittings
        (including the bore of any conduit) must be fully sealed so that the transmission of gases or
        flames is prevented (fully sealed and externally vented batteries need not comply with this
        section).

        There is also some information on this site which may be usefull:

          Oops... posted before I read you were using AGM's.

          AGM batteries only need to be vented to atmosphere, they do not need to be in a sealed box vented to the outside like wet batteries mentioned above, and can be mounted on their sides or ends if needed.

            Re: Battery Restraints - ADR requirements ?

            Mick,

            the restraint info you posted was the type of thing I was looking for. The batteries are 32kg so it looks like 25mm webbing (700Kg min. breaking strength) should meet the requirements.

            Thanks,
            Leachy.
