  • Clipsal 492 Plugs & Sockets??

    G'Day,

I'm looking at purchasing a Topo Power Panel for my FJ (pictured below). It comes with 2 Clipsal T-Sockets. They are not used up here in the US and I was wondering what items you power with the T-sockets.

I have the option of adding cig outlets, Engel Outlets, or even Merit plugs to the panel and wanted to know what I can use it for before I buy.

    Cheers,

    -Ben

Re: Clipsal 492 Plugs & Sockets??

    Hey Ben,

The T plugs/sockets are a low voltage plug (obviously!) and are generally used on things such as 32v lighting which has a 240v - 32v transformer. It's configured into a "T" so that they can't be inadvertently plugged into a 240v outlet. They can be used on any 12v device really, it's just another type of plug, one of which you don't see too many of installed in vehicles... Caravans maybe where you have an appliance that can be moved from one location to another.

If you need to run a 12v supply from your car to the campsite, say 10m or so then these would be a good idea used on a low voltage type extension lead...

I'd be inclined to put in exactly what you need rather than these plugs... They shouldn't rattle out on rough roads but there's no guarantee that they wont as there's no positive locking action to keep them in place unlike say a hella type socket.

It all depends what you want out of your system really

    Hope this helps.

      Thanks Mate,

I think I may get at least one and a few plugs and come up with clever ways to use it.

        Ben,

I'll add a bit to what Crammy has said, and agree with his comments

These plugs are also low amperage maximum of 15 amps, so if your thinking of high amps forget them.

Not a common fitment, apart from in caravans.

Common for the +ve to be the top & -ve to be the vertical.

        Hope it helps

        Cheers

Our park rangers in Victoria use these on their ute trays to plug in work lights.

Not really the best product out there, but they seem to work ok.

          Cheers

OK for running lights and such, especially while vehicle is stationary.

Not really for powering things while on the move such as fridges. They can cause voltage drop and go high resistance if shaken around a bit and of course drop out completely if you are unlucky.

For powering things while on the go (like fridges) a plug with a more positive fit like a Hella marine would be more suited.

Re: Clipsal 492 Plugs & Sockets??

I'm going with the larger panel that has 2 cig outlets, a Hella/Merit, I will change out one of the Clipsal to an Engel plug for the Freezer/fridge. I will keep the clipsal to run a camp light and fan I have in my RTT.

As for the blank space on the left of the panel I will cut out a square for an American 115 Volt (100-400W) that will come straight from the Toyota power converter activated by the on dash swith. It will take a little cutting, running wire, and soldering, but I think I'm capable of it.

Looks like it is made to fit the storage compartment LHS in the rear?

Must be a Govt thing, as we used to fit them on all the CAlM vehicles when I worked for them in early 90s. The hand held work lights and other accessories.
Plugs used to get full of water on the fire units, and they corroded as well, from the fire retardants etc
