  • Message for ARB Battery Tray Owners

I had an ARB dual battery system fitted last week with the battery tray fitted to the rear of the passenger wheel arch. Tonight I noticed the end of the bolt for the battery clamp is rubbing on the bonnet strut. I had to undo both botls and move the battery and the bolt into another position to prevent this but the tolerances are still very fine. Anybody else experienced this? Oh and the bolt on the engine side is a PITA as you need 2 x 13mm sockets and a small ratchet otherwise the bolt keeps spinning.

Heck!! I see what you mean!! It is a very close fit! Basically, the wingnut on top of the battery clamp assembly comes perilously close the gas bonnet lifting strut. You shine your torch in under there as you're closing the bonnet and you'll see it. Luckily mine doesn't seem to be hitting but geez it's a tight fit alright.

Oh, that is another thing that urks me with this Prado, yes, gas struts are good, but on this baby it limits the things you can bolt up on the sides where the struts come down hahaha.. Need a bar hold up thingy.

Pics as requested. In the first pic you can see I've wrapped an offcut of rubber around the strut to give it some protection. In the second pic you can see the solenoid (look for two red rubber boots) fitted to the firewall. All in all a very neat install except for the offending bolt.

Re: Message for ARB Battery Tray Owners

Why did you stick the second battery on the passenger side when there is a platform for one on the driver's front side?

I know it's a bit late now but when I purchased a tray from Central ARB in Welshpool (WA) they supplied me with an Outback Supplies tray complete with fixings. With the D4D there is no need to move anything to fit the tray in this position.

A mate bought a ton of ARB gear for his new Triton dual cab. When the Engel mont and fridge was fitted to the internal drawers as per the instructions and dimesions supplied he found he couldn't close the upper tailgate on the ARB canopy. He took it all to them and made them fix the mess.

Re: Message for ARB Battery Tray Owners

                    G'day D4D
I had posted a reply in your build up thread prior to reading this.
I also have fitted an ARB battery tray to the left rear of the engine bay, and therefore have also encountered the problem with the hold down bolts. My solution was to cut the J-bolt
only leaving enough thread for the Nylock nut to do its job. On the other side I use a 13mm ring spanner to hold the bolt head and socket on the top. (True a P.I.T.A.) One would think that they could have welded some fixed nuts to the under-side of the tray so bolts could have been used.
Fitting the tray designed for the Diesel models into a V6 engine bay meant relocating the charcoal canister. But by welding the original canister bracket to the solenoid mounting plate on the tray, and trimming some of the hoses, overcame this fairly easily.
We are running the Piranha DBE180s+ controller and an Exide Endurance ED50 (65ah) battery. The solid build of this tray and its Three points of contact within the engine bay ie: (Fire wall, Wheel arch & Fender panel.) where the selling points for me, even if I had to modify it to suit My application. While researching Dual battery systems TJM at Nailsworth S.A. showed Me a Prado they had equipped with a Piranha tray on the front right. The first thing I noticed when the Guy opened the hood was that the power steering reservoir was mounted on the piss, although Mr. TJM didnt seem to mind this, when I remarked about it. Not sure weather it was incorrectly fitted or just the way it is with those Piranha kits, but looked crap. I have thought about the possibility of mounting an extra battery in the front right panel position using an Outback Supplies Tray also if the need arises.

The reason for some fitting the auxiliary battery on the passenger side is to hopefully alleviate the inner guard cracking problem. If the inner guard problem is due to the weight of a second battery behind the drivers side headlight. I'm sure there is plenty of comment on this issue.
I also fitted an auxiliary battery to the passenger side and liked the extra mounting surface area and bolts. I have my compressor behind the headlight. Hope this helps.
                      cheers

Re: Message for ARB Battery Tray Owners

Hey Steve&Sandra I'm planning on putting a compressor behind the headlight on the drivers side as well. This is where yours is right? Can I ask what method you used to put it there? I was just going to get a battery tray for that position and mod it so I could mount an air compressor in there, and hopefully have enough room for some air hose in there as well. Hopefully that will minimise the need to do too much drilling into body panels.

ARB flat refused to put my 2nd battery behind the drivers side headlight where there is a space set aside for it, citing the mudguard cracking issue. They didn't want me coming back in the future with any damage. They fit an N50 Battery into their purpose built tray on the passenger side. Seems ok for the trips I've done so far.

Lots of discussion under the bridge about the cracking issue now. Many people who've put in their own tray and batteries on the drivers side have reported no issues at all. Make of it what you will.

Re: Message for ARB Battery Tray Owners

I had some steel sheet left over from a trailer build, 3mm i think from memory. So i fabricated a small piece of steel which mounts the compressor and bolts to the raised section behind the headlight. Small cheap and cheerful. I could email you the dimensions and photos if you pm me your email address. The mount works quite well and only cost a couple of dollars really. A bit of paint and a couple of bolts. I mounted the arb compressor ckma???? It works very well.
                          Cheers

Well what do you know. I metioned this issue to a friend who happens to work at ARB. After some research the answer came back...the battery clamp has a small end and a big end. Fit the small end on the guard side. As you can see from the pic there's only a few mm in it but it makes all the difference.
