  • Battery Terminals

Jaycar have these for $34.95 not a breaker, but a LED readout of the battery (aux). This would be a good addition to the dual battery setup I gather, has auxillary outputs as well. Anyone have experience with these, and would you recommend. Would you solder the ends of your cable before tightening the allen key screws ?

    Re: Battery Terminals

I have one on my aux battery.

I bought the same one off ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Battery-Terminal ... 240%3A1318

They are well made and do the job.

        Re: Battery Terminals

I did look at one of these. Didn't get one but didn't see a problem with it. The issue I had was that I would need to look under the bonnet to see the voltage. Admin Matt had a good idea where he put in an old analogue volt meter with a momentary switch (so you are not putting continuous load on a battery). I would like to do something like this but with a digital meter. I've seen some around for not too bad a price. What would be even better if you could then flick this between the two batteries.

I did the same thing, as I wanted to be able to view the voltage of both batteries from inside the cab, without having to lift the bonnet.

I got the parts from Jaycar and have a momentary switch where 'UP' reads the main battery and 'DOWN' reads the second battery (see the piccy below). Total cost was about $30. It's stored in the glove box and I pull it out and hang it out a window whenever I pull up somewhere for a night or couple of days.

I recently purchased a digital voltmeter from eBay. I think it was about $12 and when I get the time I'll replace the analogue one I have now with the digital meter.

              Re: Battery Terminals

              Hi,

You should not solder the cables, if you solder them, then do up the screw, overtime the solder can soften due to heat and the cables
can dislodge or arc. You should never solder screw connections! Same applies to crimp connections though it is ok to solder a crimp
connection after it has been crimped for extra security.

              Cheers

How have people solved the problem with trying to connect multiple thick cables to both the +ve and -ve battery terminals? My terminal posts are too short to add anymore connections.

                    D4D,

You could use something like a protected busbar type arrangement.

                    Have a look here http://www.sidewinder.com.au/page27.html

3rd or fourth item up from the bottom.

Thanks Crammy, my only issue with that style is I went to a lot of expense to have properly crimped terminals it seems a shame to cut them off.

In that case the only other option is to go with a similar setup that has threaded posts with nuts to put the lugs under...

What size wiring are we talking?
