  • Dual Battery cranking Amps

I fitted a Redarc dual battery system around 6 months ago to my 2008 D4D, and finally got around to fitting a fuse at the battery ends of both batterys in the case of a short.
As i dont drive the vehicle much the main battery went flat, so i bridged the solenoid to start of the aux battery, during the cranking it popped the 90 amp fuse I fitted.
Does anybody know what size fuse is needed ????

Depends on what model. There is a chart to assist with selection of fuses on page 2 of the instructions.

This is where this area is grey and different for all users.

If you go by the Fridge and Solar guys here, they have some scenarios in picture form.

        Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

I am about to install a redarc dual battery system, and was wondering if fuses are needed. The redarc site says there are, others say that they will blow the fused on manual linking both (for starting). If they blew 90amps, I would be concerned about 100amps that redarc recommends for spans <3m

Some of the pictures I see on this website don't seem to have them, so I don't have answer, but waiting to see what others says.

          Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

Now that I've had a think about this I think the link feature would only be of any use for a boost to the main battery ... it wouldn't be any good with a completely flat main battery. If the main is completely flat and you link them and crank, you are effectively cranking off the aux battery. During cranking the current draw is huge, could be up to 1000A inrush and 200A+ while cranking.

The only way around this would be some sort off slow blow fuse.. Something that could handle the inrush current and hold a couple of hundred amps while cranking and even then I'm not sure you would want to be cranking through the isolator.

Save the link feature for winching when both batteries are fully charged and the current draw is shared.

            Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

I have a Pirhana dual battery system, and when my main battery is flat and I want to start off the aux, I simply just connect my jumper leads across both batteries and presto.

I have done this many times and never had a problem in 10 years.

In my opinion no fuses are necessary, if you do put them in, it is just another spare fuse you have to carry around.

            Cheers

              Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

              Hi Scott,

Having gone down this track before with my 80 series Cruiser and a Redarc solenoid and now my Prado, you will need either something around 250-300 amp fuse or circuit breaker, if you think you are going to use the emergency start function, or don't use a fuse at all.
If not using a fuse sounds scary, bear in mind that not too many cars have a fuse at all between the battery and starter motor for the thick high current lead but they are usually are very well insulated and run in a manner where they are unlikely to become a problem.

Also, the Redarc solenoids are up to the job of the high starting current because even the 100 amp continuous rated model has an inrush current of 400 amps.

If you don't want to go down the track of running heavy fuses and leads between the batteries, then the suggestion of using the jumper lead earlier is a good one, as most people really wouldn't have a flat main battery often.

              Cheers, Mat

                Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

Had another flat main battery this morning, bridged the blue jump wire and vehicle started of the aux, I put 125amp fuses in the other day.
So the answer is 90 amp to low and the vehicle needs 125amp, but
Redarc contacted me this afternoon about the problem, there tech said he never fits the fuses, if your cable is well insulated and run properly there is no problem.
They put that on there paperwork to cover their arse as their are fools wiring these sysytems and it is safer to fit fuses.

I am removing the fuses as they are something else to go wrong and fix.

I have got Starter Motor cable, 0 guage I think and the convoluted tubing, so that should be ok. Question, take the cable over the radiator, or around the back of the firewall to the main battery, thinking of distance problems thats all. :?

                    Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

Hello Golly, there is a wiring loom running across in front of the radiator, in the channel. Take the plastic cover off, about 12 fixings, loosen the radiator top bolts and you can easily run your cable across on top of the loom. There is enough room to push the loom away from its fixings and tie the new cables to the loom with zip ties if you like. This is where I ran my dual battery cables.

                    Regards

                      Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

                      Golly (and 05oiler)
If you must run your battery cables across the front of the car you'd better fuse them because if you have even a minor accident there's a high liklihood of the insulation being cut and therefore a short circuit. Unfused battery cables in a short circuit can cause fire and/or explode batteries.

It is far better to run the cables to the top of the firewall and across the car there. Use corrugated conduit for extra protection. Yes, more cable length, but it works fine. I used 6B&S, unfused and both positive and negative cables. ie, I didn't use a chassis negative at the second battery. 6B&S starts my D4D on an occasional basis quite ok, but probably would not survive extended cranking with an engine that won't start. (Not likely with a diesel though. If it doesn't start in the first few turns you have other problems.)

Running the cables across the front of the car is a serious safety issue. In my opinion, don't do it, even with fuses.

                      Cheers

this safety issue has been mentioned to me by the auto sparky at work already. 8) just confirming.
The length of copper dont matter to me, got about 6 metres of Starter motor cable 0 guage I think for free.
                        Awesome !

                          Re: Dual Battery cranking Amps

You've got the right gauge, and 6 metres will give you a positive and a negative, but with little to spare, so route it carefully.

                          Good luck
