  • Thumper Power Supply

Hi just purchased a 75amp Thumper 12v Power supply, did a bit of home work and debated a dual battery or the Thumper. The Thumper is placed in the back with the Engel and chargers via a Anderson plug while you are driving. When the car is not going it stops drawing from the battery so you do not drain you car battery. It allows you to take the fridge out of the car and place in your tent or camper . It will run the 40l Engel for around 3 days before it needs a recharge. Felt it gave me the option of having the fridge out of the car and if sell car don't have to get another dual battery set up.Also if you have a generator you can charge it back up with it every 3rd day so no need to have the generator running each day.Just thought I would share this as an option instead of a dual battery set up. Re: Thumper Power Supply

Interesting to see how you find it after some use. I thought the prices I have seen were all but the same cost as a good dual batt under bonnet setup with Isolator etc.

I am looking for my used Prado now, and while I too thought of being able to use fridge out of the car, the biggest attraction for me to the Thumper is that I won't have the drilling of the inner guards to fit under bonnet system, and therefore reduce my chances of the dreaded cracked inner guards.

      Re: Thumper Power Supply

I bought one (60ah) at the Adelaide Caravan and Camping show last week.

The guys at the 'Home of 12 Volt' really seem to have their act together. They also had an AGM on display that they said was more heat tolerant than others, due to some special construction feature or other. Selling well to LC200 owners apparently.

Anyway after thinking through all the various dual battery options available, the Thumper seems to have a place. It does not stress the front panels, it solves the heat issue with AGM and gives you a battery that is safe to transport inside the vehicle. Being transportable opens up options at the campsite and also for those with more than one possible vehicle that are not otherwise available without duplicating installations. Having on-board Anderson connections, plus two types of output terminals, voltage gauge and also being capable of being used for jump start are added bonuses imo. The internals are serviceable and the cells are replaceable.

It remains to be seen how it copes with the D4D charging system, but if that is a problem, there are solutions for that.

        Re: Thumper Power Supply

Thumpers are simply Hydrid AGM batteries in a nice case with convenient connection provisions. As such they will do all that is advertised and are good option for those that just want to plug and play. But a thumper will not provide as good a deep cycle performance as an AGM dedicated deep cycle battery. Another option is to effectively build your own thumper by putting a deep cycle AGM in a battery box and fitting the necessary connection provisions.
Simply plugging any battery, thumper or otherwise, into the vechicle's charging system will result in an less than optimal recharge rate ,decreased available A/H and dereased the battery life.

The reason for my post was not to sell them, it was just to tell of an alternative to the dual battery . For me it worked out better to have a portable battery system.Just found when camping I normally stay in the one spot for a few days and found having the Engel out of the car and out of the sun and the heat of the car and "within arms reach" drew me towards a portable power supply. Thanks for this post digger. I have been looking at the same for the same reasons.

You say you should get three days use from the Thumper with your Engel. Is this with a 40L Engel? And have you actually achieved this, or is this just an estimate?

Also, do you have any pics of your set-up in the rear of the Prado with the Thumper?

Yes it is a 40 litre Engel and have got 3 days out of the Thumper , had it under a tree in Esperance with one day reached 40 degree , so was working the fridge. Will post some pics over the weekend . Also just purchased of ebay a low voltage monitor , which is similar to what they offer you with the Thumper , so it shows you the voltage but has a buzzer to let you know when the voltage is down. Still waiting for this to arrive so will post with the outcome . Cheers Digger

                Re: Thumper Power Supply

I considered a Thumper too, but the prices are, in my opinion, an absolute rip-off...

So, I built my own around a Pulse Hyper 110Ah (RC100) gel battery, which is fully sealed, so OK inside the car. This charges via a 10A Engel charger, which steps up the alternator's voltage to around 14.4V for a full charge - and it is 'current limiting', so as not to cook the battery. I made the battery box myself with a couple of 20A 12V marine grade ciggie plug outputs and a Hella charge input, a digital voltmeter and posts for charging with my Ctek when at home.

I've had it run my 40L Waeco compressor fridge for four days with no problems at all. Daytime temps were 30+ degrees every day - and obviously higher sometimes inside the car.

The whole lot cost me about $500,- including the Engel charger, which I have wired permanently near the Prado's original 12V rear output, which is still there if I ever need it. When the Pulse Hyper dies on me (many years from now, I'd imagine) I can just open up the box and drop another one in there.

Sure, there was a little tinkering involved, but nothing too tough.

Will get around to posting a few pics later...

Nice work Deeptank - I have to admit that I'd love a Thumper for the car but if I can have the fun of building one myself and make it a little more affordable then I'm all for it. Clever idea using the Engel charger.

Can't wait to see the pics - and hopefully some ideas / instructions (hint hint) on how to wire it all together.

Hey Deeptank, can you please explain how the Engel charger works, I like your idea and wouldn't mind seeing some photos of the setup please.

                        Re: Thumper Power Supply

No probs gents - the Prado is going in for a log book service tomorrow morning, so I'll get onto it with a couple of pics = a couple of thousand words.

In the meantime... here's a link to the Engel charger: http://www.engelaustralia.com.au/cgi-bi ... ny=charger

I got kind of lucky as my local Ray's Outdodors (bless their cotton socks) had them mispriced at $89,- but even at $139,- they're definitely worth it and I was willing to pay the going rate - no probs.

Wired the chager to the back of the Prado and it's got three leads coming out of it - +ve and -ve to the starter battery through the firewall and a third lead, which wires to the igniton circuit, so it's only active when the engine's running so as not to drain the starter battery.

                        Anyhoo, pics tommorow...

Righto - some pics below. They should all be fairly self-explanotary, but let me know if any questions.

Engel charger at the back below:

Black and red cables fed through firewall below

                          Battery terminal connections below

Black and red cables running along the back of the engine bay under windshield below

Blue cable connected to ignition circuit. Also wired a 10A in-line glass fuse - just in case, but this lead only activates the charger and doesn't carry any charge current.

                            Hi everyone,

I use the Thumper 75Amp hooked up to my Engel 40L fridge which is in my enclosed bike trailer and so far the best I have got is just on 4 full days without a charge.. That was in December 08, travelling from Sydney to Adelaide so about 30deg + most of the time.

We were in and out of it a fair bit due to the young fella needing bottles and food, but overall I think it is a good set up if you dont want the dual battery system in your vehicle.

I had mine shipped freight free from the Home of 12 Volt in Adelaide and with the CTEK XS 7000 included it was still cheaper than the ARB distributor price. No affiliation, just good service and a reasonable price.
