  • How long did you get from the OEM battery?

Jumped in the car and tried to start it the other day and click click click. Flat battery, No worries cranked off the aux. But after 2 days on the charger the hydrometer is still down in the red 1150. The battery is one month out of warranty although Toyota will pro rata pay a new battery. Works out to be around the 90 dollar mark for a new Toyota battery. Anyone else killed a battery? We got 18000kms and 13 months out of the battery. Thats my new personal best. I think its been dicky since day one as on the delivery day they waved us off and click click click so jump back and apprentice came out. Oh and im not putting another crappy toyota battery in.

    Re: Cranking battery died

Yeap they are crap, first thing I do is stick a 700 CCA Yuasa Overlander in as a replacement.

Even if you do get a warranty version, if you do regular off roadsing it will still die in 12-18months if you are lucky.

I haven't been successful but you can ask Toyota to put the warranty money towards an Overlander one

The main problem is the build quality, if you do any serious off road, vibrations tend to crack the outer case, the problem is made worse if they are over tightened.

The internals plates are up to the same quality as the outside material, crap.

Check to see if in your service they have checked the battery acid levels, marked Hi-Lo on the outside of the case.

After I remove them from the car, they usually are put out to pasture on electric fences and they only last about 12 mths or so

They probably would make a good anchor, or a door stop ??

      Re: Cranking battery died

toyota batteries are made by yuasa/century (dependent on vehicle).
they are then just fitted with toyota stickers.
[just some info i thought i'd share whilst on the subject]

True they are, but they are a completely different product, the OME is mass produced for as cheap as possible, the aftermarket Overlanders are in a completely different class.

Toyota also make forklifts, Lexus and run in the F1 series but they are all completely different products and markets

Mine is still going strong since Feb2004 so I believe you had a faulty one . 18000km and only 13months sounds strange to me,should of laster alot longer  .I would definitely would not of been happy replacing my battery after 13months  I think what also didn't help much was that a brand new battery was allow to run completely flat, its not a good idea to allow batteries to run flat "something about it reduces its life". Don't know how true this is but I have always kept my batteries fully charged and never allow them to go flat.

well my OEM battery finally died.. thats just over 4.5 years and 50,000kms.. thats pretty damn good as batteries go..

i knew it has been on the way out since summer, and the colder weather would be its downfall..

its marked as a Panasonic battery.. will be putting a new one in tomorrow

Re: How long did you get from the OEM battery?

Batteries really are a strange thing. Most are brands are manufacted in the same workshop and labelled and packed differently. Obviously there are small changes in plate design etc. so a battery is not just a battery. Would I ever go OEM - nope. Yuassa Century or something like that if I wanted reliability and life. - You do get what you pay for.

Battery life. If it goes flat and stays that way, then look at buying a new one cause it will never recover (cranking batteries). If SG's on the hydrometer are below 1180 then it is possibly time for replacement. Try a charge for a day or so, and if it doesn't get above 1200, then buy a new battery cause you need one. Usually when a battery dies, one cell will be considerably less than the others.

I drove troopies for decades and 50 000km was about what you got out of a battery, whether it took 5 months or 3 years. They were all new cars. Knowing the charge rate of Prados, maybe this might help lengthen the life of the battery as it is not overcharging but who knows.
Our Hyundai gets 3 years regardless and the oldies get 7 years out of their Missin Pulsar. Although the Hilux gets 10 months with Cape York trips and 3 years without.

not really relevant, but I replaced my 1997 HSV Clubsport battery last year... 11 years and the last half (6-7) it's only had short trips to the train station (5mins) three days a week and one or two 20km runs when I drive it to work. For OEM equipment, it did ok.

Re: How long did you get from the OEM battery?

We just had to change our OEM last fortnight. We would probably have changed it months ago as I just ran on the other one since I started disliking the main.

We have done 88,000K's since we purchased our may 05 TD oiler new. so thats pretty good.

Saying that we put in a POWERCHARGE sumfin sumfin as our second battery, and it died 25 months later. 1 month out of warranty. It was replaced with a century, about 12 months ago. so far so good with that one.

now all set for the GTG...

2003 t/d GXL still on original oem battery but was told at last service that it is getting close to the end of its life. have done 130000k. No idea what to fit next, if I thought I could get the same life again would probably go OEM.

I got 4 yrs and 130,000kms out of mine.

i've replaced it with an Exide extreme. I never had a problem with Exide batteries.

Cant for the life of me remember what the manufacturers name was, but the Powercharge one I had was dual post, One normal termainal (post), and the other was a smaller post with through hole for bolting stuff to.

Again, sorry I cant remember the brand, But our local Battery Wholesaler had them. Just plain black body, recessed caps.
