  • LOVELLS and hello

Hi Guys, am new to the forum and this is my first post. Not much experience in the Prado scene, however have owned and modded 4Runners, and a TJ in the past.

I have read a lot of posts on your forum and others on which spring setup etc etc. By the sounds of it I will go with LOVELLs. What I am wondering is if anyone puts HD raised in the front, (to deal with ARB bar and 8000lb Warn), and medium duty raised in the rear?

Also if you have, can you post a pic here taken on the flat road preferably or point me in the direction of the pic.

From what I have read on here, most you guys are putting HD in the rear due to load carriage etc and Mediums into the front. What is the reason behind this? Our Prado is a daily driver, not a tourer, it doesn't tow, and it only carries myself and my fiance around. I cannot foresee any change to this, unless of course a little dirt magnet pops up. However I will be installing PolyBags into the rear when I drop my springs out, just to be on the safe side.

Also anyone in Sydney metro, could you point me in the direction of a good exhaust place that will do headers and 2.5inch exhaust, not something that sounds like an old gemini, but is nice and discreet. Would be greatly appreciated.

I will post some pics a little later (I have a Mac and god knows how to shrink photos down!).

    Thanks for the help guys.
    Brett

Without knowing what software you have, here are a couple of easy ways:

    1) Using the built-in "Preview" application.
    • Open the photo in Preview
      Go to the Tools Menu
      Select 'Adjust Size'
      Tinker
      Go to the File Menu
      Select 'Save As...'
Give it a name and compression level (70% or so)

    2) Use Smallimage
    • Download SmallImage2 Here
Install it into the Applications Folder
Open your image file using SmallImage (Either use the File menu, or drag and drop)
Down the bottom, in the scaling section, select 'Fixed'
Click on "Width" and change it to "Longest"
Type the dimension you want in pixels
      Click 'Process Files'

    3) Use Photoshop (if you have it)
    • Open the image in Photoshop
From the 'File' Menu, select 'Save for Web'
      Tinker with settings
      Save

    Hope that helps

      Re: LOVELLS and hello

      Welcome aboard BLMiller

I am running HD raised Lovells in the front with standard raised in the rear, alloy bull bar and dual batteries are fitted.

I am happy with the ride quality, as well as the fact my Prado sits level (instead of nose down/bum up lol)

This configuration handled an extended fully loaded Simpson crossing, Finke River, Uluru, Cooper Pedy, Dig Tree etc run.
Even though I had 4 persons and all our gear the rear dropped only slightly so I believe air bags will suffice for when you load up as I usually have only myself and my daughter plus maybe one of her friends on board most times.

I have Lovell shocks as well and while probably not as good as say Bilsteins they handle well enough and were good value for the money in my opinion.

Just remember to drive to suit the conditions and your suspension limitations and they will be fine.

Oh yeah, don't forget to submit your location in your profile if you haven't already.

          Re: LOVELLS and hello

          Welcome to PP blmiller

I went the HD's in the back as you described... but I would probaly go with MD's and airbags if I was to do it again. As already mentioned it was due to the weight I carry for work but I'd say the airbags would be a better option for someone not carrying around lots of weight all the time.

When I get a bull bar I'll swap the MD's in the front for HD's all around to level it out though.
          Cheers, Leon

            Brett,

Not a great shot but shows the ride height.

                Re: LOVELLS and hello

Well the new Lovells springs and shocks/struts have been put on and are great. I got HD all round and it rides better than I expected. Went out for a bit of a drive off road the night after the install and the car flexes really well. Ill post a few before and after shots to show the difference for you that are thinking of the same options.

                Before front

                After front

                Before back

                After back

                Before

                After

It actually feels like a car now as well, doesn't handle like a boat.

One thing that I am thinking of doing is changing the shocks/struts to OME or Nitrocharger sports. Apparently the Lovells shocks are made by Gabriel and aren't everything they are supposed to be, however for the price it is to be expected. And a nice thing to know about the Lovells springs is that if they sag even 10mm, they will be replaced by Lovells free of charge, according to my installer. Very interesting.

                  Very nice...
Any measurements? I'd be interested how high the front went up as only put MD springs in the front of mine.
                  Cheers, Leon

                    Leon,

Yeah the front today, which is 3 days after install is 810 mm, the rear is 830 mm. The back from memory was very similar to yours after your install?

                      Hi Brett,

Noticed you lifted your Prado last month. How do you feel the lift is now? I am thinking about the Bilstein/Lovell lift also. Has the ride quality improved on the black stuff as well as off road? Reason for asking is that although I go 4WD every fortnight at least, I also use my Prado as a daily driver. Thanks

                        Yowie,

Its not too bad, Im similar to you. It is a daily driver and off road every weekend I guess. The ride is firm, and could probably go with medium duty raised in the read. But overall Im very happy with it. The ride has improved 100% and it handles a hell of a lot better also. Where you point the front wheels, the car generally wants to go, very different to before!

                        Hope this helps

                          Hi Brett,

Good to see your happy with the install.

I recently changed my rear springs from medium duty Lovells to heavy duty Kings.
The reason being that I have fitted a Black Widow drawer plus would be carrying a 52l fridge plus gear for 4 people etc on a trip to the cape.

The Kings lifted the rear by over 30mm even with the Drawer fitted, plus my tools, recovery gear, fridge with slide and all the personal gear etc.

Only issue I have is that on full extension the Kings come loose and can ( & did) move away from the spring seats. Otherwise the Kings handled the extra load very well. Still considering if I will refit the original MD Lovells now I am back.

                            Hey Brett,

Doing some reasarch on suspension and from what i'm reading seems like your lovells " 2" " lift is higher than alot of them going around, looks pretty good ground clearance too. Has it settled down lower now? have you had any troubles with the CV boots? from what i'm reading it sounds as though you are close to the limit on their articulation before they start scrubbing themselves out.

                            Cheers Luke
