  • Dual Battery Help Needed

    Hi all,
I am looking to fit a dual battery system to my '08 model D4D Prado. The job looks simple enough to do but when chasing parts I was told that I would need an extra wiring loom specifically for the D4D engine as it is different from the older style diesel engines. Has anybody else come across this, if so what is this extra loom for and what does it do. The dual battery topics I have read are awesome which inspired me to give it a go as well. :?
    Thanks Ray

    Hey mate,

I have a D4D and as far as I can see there is nothing 'different' about the wires used on the DB.......

The charging characteristics if the D4D alternator require the use of a boost system to achieve 100% battery charge and thus battery life expectancy. But for any particular system there is no difference in the way you wire it into a D4D compared to other Prado variants.

I've fitted an OL Chargemaster system to my 09 D4D auto and no issues. This is the same system as fitted to my 98 V6 manual which has been working without fault for around 5 years now.

yes you do need the second wiring kit for the d4d. It doesnt come in the kit from arb. From memory its just an extension lead and plugs for the little sensor thingy on the fuel filter housing which the pre d4d engine does not have. The battery housing relocates the fuel filter housing and the standard lead will not fit hence the need for an extension. The little kit costs an extra 50 dollars or therabouts.
Hope this helps. Dont leave the shop with out it or you will be driving back for it.
          Cheers

Thats assuming you use the ARB tray that places the battery on the passenger side fire wall/wheel arch where the fuel filter is. If your mounting behind the drivers headlight you won't need to move anything.

Thats why i mentioned its not in the kit from ARB. ARB dont do a d4d batteyr tray for behind the headlight or so i was told by the ARB dealer.

ARB dealers in WA do sell a battery tray for the driver's side of both diesel and petrol 120 series - it's a WA made "OUTBACK SUPPLIES", comes with all bolts required and includes additional brackets for the V6 model.

                  Re: Dual Battery Help Needed

I find it interesting that ARB are the only company I've come across so far to offer the extra loom, feels like a sales pitch to me. I will be doing the dual set up shortly and think I will stick to using the Piranha tray and Redarc isolator, 6 B&S cable and so on. Great site for information, thanks for the help all.

                    Re: Dual Battery Help Needed

The arb tray mounts the aux. battery up on the passenger side towards the rear of the engine bay. Just in front of the firewall.
To do this the fuel filter housing requires moving, in doing this the original length of wire which connects the little black thing on the fuel filter housing is too short. Hence arb offer a length of wire with the necessary plugs to allow the fitment. Now this is only applicable with the d4d engine as pre d4d do not have the black thingamajig on the filter housing. Oh and not all arb dealers in wa sell the tray to allow fitment behind the headlight, i tried to get one.
                    cheers
