  • Centre Diff Lock Dash Light

    Hi All

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but the search function is being childish at the moment.

Playing around at Sues Bridge Today (pics to come shortly) and whilst following blackwood river, had to switch to low range for a rather step hill. As I went up, I noticed that the low range symbol was not showing although I know that the prado was is low range. Any body else had this problem?

Have not had a chance yet to get under the prado to see if something has come loose. Hoping it is just a loose wire/connection

      Re: Low Range Dash Light

After looking at the schematics and sticking the head under the truck, I can not see the connectors I need to clean. The schematics have two connectors on the passenger side and one on the drivers side. I have found the one on the drivers side, but for the life of me have no idea where the ones for the other side are.

If someone has some time and is able, could you please take some pics of the passenger side of the transfer box where the connectors are so I can see what it is I am looking for.

Thanks Prado for that link. So did what you did and found one wire run with one big black connector and one blue connector, both not connected to anything, and nothing plugged into the passenger side of the transfer case. Getting the feeling I am missing some wiring here. Did find the oxygen sensor wiring loom though!

I think we can put that down to the ooopps factor. Would really love a pic from underneath with the plates removed so we could mark where these connectors are. Might do that next time the Prado's in for a service, would make it heaps easier to fault find problems.

OK now I have a problem, went out, looked under and to my surprise, looked nothing like the photo you posted Prado. No wires there at all, and it looks like there never was.

Looks like a trip to Toyota is now on the cards.

                  Re: Low Range Dash Light

yep, that would be the reason.

Just had a look at a Lexus lx470 (I think these are the same as ours, pics looks the same) and the guy on the forum posted pics from his manual GX. The sensor looks to be on the drivers side, and if its the grey connecter, then mine is cracked and will need to be replaced.

Depending on which case you have you have either two(GX and GXL without traction control) or three (Grande/traction control) transfer indicator switches.

I note that yours is a manual so you have one each side. They screw in the side, high up on the transfer case and and right at the rear of it. They are well out of sight.

Here are some photo's showing it, it sits directly under the front driveshaft, across from the exhaust pipe, at the front of the transmission, passengers side.
Matt, thats the RPM sensor for the auto trans (don't confuse with speed sensor) Depending on the model of auto box fitted there may be another one on the other side, higher up, that is identical.

If there is still confusion in the location I can post a diagram, however it will be tomorrow when I get back to the office.

                      Re: Low Range Dash Light

I've also just spent 20 odd minutes having a good look around and can see no such plug (Grande 4sp). There are 3 or 4 other plugs on the passenger side, most are high and impossible to reach. Couldn't see anything on the drivers side other than an oxy sensor wire. Will watch with interest.

The odd this I noticed is that whilst I never get any dash light when operating normally in low range there is one exception - when the gearbox is in Park and I shift the transfer case to Neutral a "AT/P" light comes on in the top left side of the instument panel. This is the ONLY time/config when any dash light appears. According to the owners manual this is the "Unengaged Park Warning Light". Can see the point of this warning light at all - if the vehicle doesn't move then isn't it obvious a lever isn't properly engaged!

There is nothing in the owners manual that refers to any Low Range light in the instument panel and I've never seen one so I've always assumed there isn't one. Others may have them but I don't believe a 2003 Grande does. For those that DO have a low range light, where does it appear in the inst panel and what does it say (pic would be great if possible).

There seems to be some confusion about the light... it's NOT a low range indication light(it's obvious when it's in low range!!).. It's to indicate the center diff is locked (which is not obvious but can be mechanically detrimental).

In your case (Grande) press the center diff lock button.

That I know and has never been in doubt but as per the thread title I understood the issue was a 'low range dash light', not a diff lock question.

There is NO low range light on any model of Prado with a manual trans...... The light it to indicate that the center diff is locked!.

On older GX and GXL Prados the action of selecting low range also locked the diff in one action... hence light on.

On Grandes and all models with Traction control... press the center diff lock button and the light comes on.

BTW on a Grande there are three low range indicator switches... two passenger side right next to each other, one on the drivers side directly opposite.
