  • Battery charging, how often etc

Been looking around in this thread but cant find a post that answers all my questions, so here goes.

Put the car fridge (Waeco cf50) in the back last weekend and the error light started to flash. Bugga.

Grabbed the multi meter to check the aux battery, and the multi meter was flat. Double Bugga.

Checked both batteries tonight after my wife has driven to and from work Monday to Thursday, about a 60km round trip, mostly on the freeway. Both batteries read 12.6 volts.

I've connected the CTEK charger for an overnight charge, so i will see what they read in the morning.

So my questions: What would the aux battery drop to b4 a fridge wont work?

What charge will a deepcycle battery take b4 its 'full', and how often should i give the batteries a little extra with the charger?

    Cheers

My CF50 does that occasionally if you start the car with it plugged in and the fridge is trying to run.

There is a setting switch on the waeco for the low battery shutdown, check that is set right.

I just unplug mine and plug it back in if the error lightcomes on. Problem solved. Its all to do with voltage drop basically.

Normally i can put the fridge in the back, plug it in, and leave it for as long as i like. Works a treat. I generally plug the fridge in to the 240v inside for an hour or so b4 i put it in the car.

Tried the un-plug and try again trick, same result (error light and not running)

Battery protection switch set on 'medium', little red thingy underneath set on 'normal'

Regarding your question as to what voltage does the compressor cut out in the fridge and the fan runs only. I think it is when the volts in the battery are 10.8V, Also the volts may drop a little at the plug end for the fridge. I always unplug at the fridge and do my voltage reading there. Another tip is make sure the wire from aux battery is say 6mm. Hope this helps.

Have you read your manual? My Waeco CF50 manual states:

Switch off voltage - 10.4v (Low), 11.4v (Med), 12.0v (high)
          Restart voltage - 11.2v (Low), 12.2v (Med), 12.9v (High)

So on medium you shouldn't get shut down until batts are at 11.4v. If you batts are showing 12.6v then something is not right. Have you checked the voltage at the plug? You may have some decent voltage drop causing the Waeco to lose interest.

I've also has some success with the turn on/off or pull plug method but I think this has something to do with resetting the restart voltage parameters (as above). In your case, if there isn't enough voltage to get it up and running initially then this method won't help.

Is there any dramas whacking the charger on the main battery overnight (with the wiring still plugged to the battery) and I assume that this would trigger the isolator and send charge to the AUX battery as well?

Thanks for the info wannawodka, the only time i checked the voltage was after the car had been driven for nearly a week so not sure what it would have been on the day. I can see that the voltage may have dropped to below 11.4, next time i will unplug, set the switch to Low, plug in and see what happens.

To be honest i don't think i ever looked at those switches until TP mentioned them above ops:

Did this in reverse, put the charger on the Aux battery and both were getting some juice, maybe that's why the charger was still showing the battery charging symbol after an overnight charge :?: ie charging two batteries not just one.

              Thanks Guys

Didn't realise that could happen .... I thought the isolator was one way!

Re: Battery charging, how often etc

As i understand it, the Redarc solenoid allows the cranking battery to be drawn down to a point when it is isolated with enough juice to still do its job easily (start the car). So i assume it stays open when current is flowing the other way :?:, from the aux battery to the main.

Happy to be corrected but i think thats how it works.

My guess is that the solenoid hadn't opened up. It will stay closed with the car off until the measured voltage drops below the low voltage threshold. Once you put a charger on it will stay closed indefinitely because the charge voltage is at or above the redarc operating voltage threshold.

Or you have an extremely flat aux battery (Or stuffed) or low amp charger.

                    Hope that makes sense...

In regards to the fridge, check your voltage at the plug on the fridge cord and let us know what you have. Also check (if you can) the voltage on the fridge at the time it tries to run before it faults.

Re: Battery charging, how often etc

Just checked the voltages, 12.68v at both plugs in the back, 12.68v at the aux battery, and 12.45 at the cranking battery.

Havn't been able to check the voltage on the fridge b4 it starts to run, its got a heap of frozen stuff in it ready for the long weekend and probably wont be starting for a while.

So what would a battery read if it was fully charged, and how long would that take?
