  • Is there a secret to getting Anderson plugs apart?

I've set up an Anderson plug at the rear of the car to power my boat winch and my compressor and have leads on both winch and compressor to match.

Trouble is, when I plug the two Anderson plugs together, they lock tighter than mating octopi (octopussies?).

I've had to wedge a screwdriver into the join between the two plugs while wrenching and wrenching to separate them. Is there a method to easing them apart without having to put both feet on the towbar? Can I put some sort of lubricant on the contacts to help them slip apart, or am I doing something wrong?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Dave

They should come apart fairly easily, i.e. should not require a screw driver. They do become easier to seperate with use but should not require any leverage.

The side that has been screwed down may have been slightly over tightened and may have deformed the plug slightly ??

I have a T-Handle on the anderson plug on my camper trailer. Makes it a lot easier to get it out.

      I bought mine from here.

Thanks guys, I might have been a little too enthusiastic with the tension on the mounting screws, but I will definately get hold of a handle or two.

A couple of other things you can get for anderson plugs.

For the last 3-4 years, I have covered the plugs with rubber boots mainly to prevent stone damage, they are not water proof but do cover the rear wires. Ebay seems to be the cheapest place to pick these up.

I have found if you place a drop of nail polish on the mounting thread (works like locktite) and only apply enough tension on the screws to prevent movement seems to work best.

I put a thin spacer (about 2mm) under the fixed socket so that the rectangular bit that receives the trailer socket has about a 2mm clearance under it.

Also, if you solder the terminals onto your cables
            (a) they may not go on straight, and
            (b) soldering can harden the cables for about 25mm back from the soldered part.

When you then push the connectors into the plastic housing it's possible for the hardened, off-centre cables to restrict the movement of the contacts on their springs, especially if large cable is used. I found that with 6B&S cable soldered into 50 amp andersons - had to re-do 'em.

If you do feel the need to spray stuff on the anderson plugs, be carefull what you use. I sprayed a bit of contact cleaner on them and they evaporated. End result was two lugs hanging in the air.
Funny as this same spray worked on the plastic thingys in my fishing reels.  But they still work too. Hopefully forever
I did notice in the boat that after a day of salt spray you had to be strong to undo the plug, so now I have soldered and bolted the connection which eliminated the plug. - Not that it will help you, for your case.
