  • Rear work/spot light install

I'm looking at installing a rear work/spot light and would love some advice from anybody who has made/installed one themselves.

Looking at something similar to this the telescopic one on this page - just not telescopic:
    http://www.kaymar.com.au/products/spare ... telescopic

The plan is to make a bracket which will fit behind the spare wheel bracket and place the light just above the spare wheel, but there is not much room back there, especially with the BFG's. It will be activated via a seperate switch on the dash and not activated with the reverse lights. Of course I have a couple of questions.

    1) Are there any ready made work/spot light brackets available for the 120? I see Kaymar make an extendable model, but I'm not a big fan and I'm sure I could knock one up which is more suitable myself. Anything else out there I could get a rough plan off?

    2) What is the best way to get power to the light? I was considering drilling a small hole through the rear door near the spare whell bracket then following the other cables to the front (I see Chippy has some rear roof lights - where did you get the power for those?).

    Cheers.

Very nice - and similar to what I was after, the only difference being I only need the vertical pole, not the horizontal pole.

What tyres do you run though? I don't know if that setup would work with the BFG's - there is not much space between the tyre and the rear door, and I don't really want to put more spacers in!

It's not mine and they do custom work so you could get one fabricated that fits with BFGs

The strip that runs along the roof is a great place to hide cables under, im not sure how chippy ran his but i have my gps antenna mounted near the rear roof rack with the cable run along to the front under the strip, then poked under the windscreen rubber down into the engine bay, all concealed, there is enough room for a UHF coax, so enough room for cable for a rear light, you could mount the light on the back of a roof cage or rack.

              speedcom,
Could you post a pic of the cable leaving the strip and showing the route to the engine bay?

Probably not suited to what you need/want but I thought this 'nifty' nonetheless. Spotted in Townsville a few months back - lights just below the number plate. far too low for many applications but still pretty cool I think.

that is my rig pictured in wannawodka's post. And I am sure that the rear lights would be good for tailgaters, but of course I would never do that...

The lights actually make a very useful reversing light for the bush, and while certainly low are still usable as a camp light. To get more sideways light dispersal, if I was doing them again I would try to get some sort of driving light rather than pure spotties.

I switched these over from my 1997 Prado to save having to cut and powdercoat a fresh mounting plate. At the time those were the lights with the shallowest backset - so they fit flush in the number plate bracket without rubbing against the door skin - and I couldn't find an equivalent set with driving light lenses. Maybe there are others available now.

The picture also shows my trailer plug socket correctly mounted through the bumper (making it higher and impossible to drag). The bumper sub-frame has the perfect-sized hole for the socket, you just have to make sure you hit the hole when drilling through the bumper! If you look really, really closely you can also just make out the receiver for my shovel holder that I installed in the middle of the spare-wheel carrier.

                      cheers, Tony

i have more detailed pics on the how to and how the brackets been fabricated ...
you will need spacers for the back tyre..i have that also on the build up....

i am currently working in PNG but on my return will make sure i post the pics for you guys as there has been a few requests to post them...

just to go into more detail....to answer some of your questions.

i had my kaymar cut down so its sits lower ..the pic on build up is before i cut it down..

i also removed the rear external switch on the light and ran wiring to a internal switch on the dash...(yes it it good for tail gaters and it pumps out a hell of a light!!)

i drilled a small hole in the rear door where the tyre carrier is painted and put a small gromet.. the wires run through the door skin and into the wiring that goes into the rear of the door...then its just a matter of runing it up to the front...

                          hope that helps..

JGD, on my last two luxes i had a narva work light on the back that has a waterproofed switch at the back of the light, this way your not having to run cables into the cab, just run a cable direct from your battery (second batt best) in corrugated conduit through your chasis to the back then upto the light. and don;t forget to put fuse protection in, as a short could torch your car. Dunno bout flashing tailgaters though, some bloke down south got whacked in the head with a mag lite and his wife got a few slaps too from road rage, welcome to the modern world.

Re: Rear work/spot light install - PICS ADDED

Just a quick update. Since posting this topic I've been searching for a suitable ready-made product to use for a reverse/spot/work light, however short of getting a rear bar installed (not happening at the moment!) I wasn't happy with any of the products - so instead I decided to make my own.

I got some sturdy steel tube ect from the local Bunnings for about $20 and put together the following:

                              1) I molded a base to the curve of the rear door so prevent any tyre rub. This base will replace my current rear wheel carrier spacers.

                              2) A length of steel tubing was used to make the vertical arm, and this was welded to the base.

                              3) A short horizonal arm was added to bring an attached light to the edge of the rear wheel, preventing a shadow being cast by the rear wheel when the light is turned on.

                              4) A quick test to show where a light will sit and to ensure the bracket clears the rear tyre.

The bracket is solid enough and was able to support my weight, so should have no worries holding a light. The position (to the off/drivers side) also allows easy access to the rear window washer and a clear view out the rear window.

The cables will be run within the tubing and I'll drill a small hole in the rear door to get power.

I'm now just in the process of cleaning up the welds and spraying the bracket black, but once it is all completed I'll post some final pictures.
