  • Roof-console wiring

    Hi all

Planning for a roof console install...

Some advise has been to pick up the constant 12v off the interior lights for use by the UHF and a additonal 12v socket.

My question to you all is , would it be better/smarter/safer to run a new 12V (+/-) power run from the 2nd battery up to the console instead to power the UHF and 12v socket???

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Roof-console wiring

Hi Borgy, its really going to depend on the wiring that is suppling the exisiting lighting, it may not be sufficiant to power a uhf and worst case senario, a full rated load off the 12 volt outlet plus the lights, which i would most likely assume it wouldnt be rated for those loads, only asuming cause i have not actually looked but if other vehicle wiring is anything to go by well....? Personally if it was me (electrican) i would run a new circuit to supply your UHF and 12 volt outlet, one being handy to have it off the second battery (more 12 volt outlet) and also you wont have to worry about overloadings or cable damage due to an under rated wire, hope its something to think about and it helps, as i say i have not actually looked

      Re: Roof-console wiring

      Borgy,
I think you will find the UHF draws bugger all power. My TX4400 is wired into the constant 12V off the front interior light circuit and to date I haven't had any problems. The lights in the console itself are powered from the middle interior light. Re the additional 12v outlet, what are you planning to utilise it for? I am pretty sure that when people install those roof mounted DVD players, the power comes from the interior light circuit.

      Cheers,
      Kevin

        Re: Roof-console wiring

when i fitted my roof console, i ran another wire for powering my UHF.
that way, if i want to wire anything else up there i have a better supply wire ready.
i just ran a 3mm (10 amp) wire up ds a-pillar and tucked it in hood lining across front screen.
it only took 30 mins tops to have it there.
i would rather run a known wire than push the 1-1.5mm wire thats up there and start melting insultation.
        for me it's cheap insurance

          Re: Roof-console wiring

You are better to run a new power wire to the roof console.

Roof mounted DVD players come with wiring to be run down to the dash area for power supply, they DON'T use the existing interior wiring as it is insufficent size to be safe.

As for the extra time it would take to run proper wires to a roof console. Probably only a short time if you did it as you mount the console.

Agree with Leethal & Damonat, I ran a cable this morning and it only took about 30 minutes or so. Hardest part was getting the existing roof console out. Plenty of space to run through the existing cable retainers and just cable tied any slack to the lighting harness. Dead easy.

Is there a trick to getting the existing fixture (lights/sunnies holder) out?

It is held in by two plastic clips at the left & right front. Similar to the centre console side cover clips.
I put a plastic gyprock spreader between the console and the roof lining to enable me to get my piggy fingers underneath. It is then a question of pulling downwards.
Warning, it is tight, very tight but it does come out. The back is not clipped and just has a white plastic lip which just hooks over the rear of the roof lining.
You can just see this in the image I posted.

Is the front as you look at it (ie the end with the lights, closest to driver) or the end towards the front of the car (with sunnies holder)?
I'm so confused, and don't want to break the thing.

Thanks to all for your help and pics! PP assists again!

Spend a fair bit of time this weekend fitting a new Dept of the Interior Roof Console.

FInally got it all in and the UHF and additional 12v are all working fine (off a new dedicated power run to 2nd battery, both serparately fused). Just managed to get enough cable length for the interior light BUT for the courtesy light/sunglass holder i just could not figure out how to get enough cable length (with out any damage ) to allow me to re-conenct the power to the 2 courtesy lights ! (so for now they are disconnected). It seems you need a reasonable amount of cable to reach further back and to allow connection.

Has anyone fitted a Dept Of Interior roof console (where you resuse the courtesy light/sunglass unit) and got these lights to work using the original power runs? Appreciate any help you may have!

Apart from the above the UHF seems better, maybe due to upgraded power runs and it is much easier to hear, now its near my ears!

                        Cheers

i have the dept of interior overhead console.
i too had the same issue when it came to fitting the middle courtesy lights.
i just pulled on the wires as to release the tape that holds them from rattling.
don't pull the wires too hard, as you could break a wire.
from memory there is 2 or 3 wires.
just cut and extend using small guage wire, like speaker wire.
only needs to be 50-80mm longer.
