Appreciate advice with regards to unlocking my Prado without the keyless entry transmitter. I want to go surfing at the beach and have arranged a blank key to be cut that I can take with me into the water. Only problem the newly cut key alone doesnt enable access via the electronic locking. It also got me thinking if the battery went flat, how do you access the cab to release the hood to replace the battery. Have I missed something?

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
i have a key that doesn't have a transmitter in it, just an empty shell. works fine to open the drivers door just won't start the car. I've used that before to leave the keys in the car and put that one in the pocket at the beach where it doesn't matter if it gets wet!

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
I too use a blank key to lock and unlock when leaving the vehicle for windsurfing, via the drivers door. I hang the key around my neck and under a wetsuit/rashy. Works a treat and only cost $5 at the local locksmith. Haven't had an issue with rust, and there's no chance of someone seeing your hiding spot.

your only issue will be that the immobiliser is not active when you use a plain key. But is it still better than hiding the key somewhere and hoping no one has seen it. :shock:Navy

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
I am sure this has been covered before but.......
With a flat battery the door locks become just like the "old fashion type" and only unlock the door the key is in...just turn the key
If you get plain key cut the car will not start as there is no transponder with that key but you will be able to unlock the doors....
I just use the valet key (key without the buttons) on a string and have never had any problems with rust, I just wash it when I have a shower at the beach..GXL D4D AUTO Option pack more to follow & Camprite TL8s

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
Many thanks for the feedback to date,
I had a blank key cut (no transponder) and tried unlocking the car - no luck - you can hear the central locking clicking though no doors unlock. The blank key will lock all doors though it wont unlock them. The original key with transponder will unlock/lock the doors when using the key (i.e not the button).
I did some more reading and came across an article that mentioned keyless entry systems type A and type B. I had no luck in finding further details of what the difference is. I also note I have a 2007 Prado and there is only one physical key lock on the whole car - the drivers door. At this stage it appears you need the transponder attached to the key.
Any further thoughts?
Regards

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
you could use the service key. I have a 2007 GXL, the key will lock and unlock the door ( does it on mine)Navy

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
You can easily test if it will work.
Take the module out of the key and try it, I did and I could get into the car but not start it.October 2003 build GLX Prado Diesel. Nudge Bar, window tinting, fitted sheepskin seatcovers, bonnet protector, cargo barrier, sandgrabba mats and empty pockets.

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
Oldsalt's right - I took the module out and the Toyota key unlocked the doors - the new key I obtained is a poor cut and wont turn anti-clockwise (i.e. unlock) in the mechanism - I have never used the key itself to unlock the door and as such wasnt sure which direction unlocks the door. A well cut key and I should be in business.
Thanks all.

Originally posted by begsI would have though that the immobiliser activates once you take the regular key out of the ignition. I'll have to test that over the weekend.

If that is the case then all you need is a simple blanck key cut for $10 and bobs your uncleNavy

Re: Unlocking Prado w/out keyless entry
The transponder for the immobilizer needs to be with the cut key or it will not work.GXL D4D AUTO Option pack more to follow & Camprite TL8s
