  • HID conversion question....

    Hi all,
I am looking at doing the HID conversion on my 07 D4D GXL and am wondering if I can get some help on what kit to buy, what globe configuration I need, where is a good outlet to buy from, etc. Also wondering if you guys and gals know if there is much difference between 35w and 55w HID? I have read a little about the HID and some say that the Philips kit is the best. Oppinions? The other question is when I convert to HID, what do I need to change so that my LF 240 Blitz come on with the high beam stalk as when I unplug both lights the spots will not work, plug one light in and they work. Thanks in anticipation...

    Hi Aaron,

I am not sure what you mean by plugging in lights are you talking about the headlight plugs? Cause if you remove the plugs from the headlights you are breaking the electrical circuit.

As for the quality of kits well that is subjective, most of the kits are generic out of China and have been rebadged. A quality bulb will usually have a ceramic base not plastic, cost of a moderately good kit will run around the $150 to $200 mark. To change your LF 240 blitz you will need an adapter to replace the one that houses the halogen globe. There is now a H3 globe adapter for sale on ebay for $75. Or you can buy a H1 globe adapter from Bushy555 for $15 also on ebay. I went with Bushies adapter but at the time the other adapter was not available. The same mob who produce the $75 adapter on ebay also sell a conversion kit for it. I cannot tell you if the kit is quality or not. I can say that Bushy's kit is of good average quality and he has been good with the warranty with me, he has sent me two ballasts and a new globe. There was nothing wrong with the ballasts it turned out to be the globe that had arced through the insulation to the Bullbar. I am now in the process of running the cables the same way as Chippy has by drilling through the Bullbar and using rubber grommets to run the cable through.

Just be aware that some kits have a very short high tension lead to plug the globe in to, this can be a problem when it comes to mounting the ballast. You can get 1 metre extension cables but depending on the ballast this can cause a problem with igniting the globe.

My Lightforce Blitz 240 thread is not a bad read: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3082

    Cheers

Hi again, Sorry...I left my questions a little hard to understand..... I am looking at converting the headlights only at the moment. I did mean that the driving lights don't work when I unplug the headlights, as I am going to have to unplug the headlights to run the HID's. Thanks Mav, Hope my question now a bit clearer.

Just ordered a kit myself, with allot of research i found that the "better" ones have digital ballasts, i also thought about the 55w but the only thing that worried me was the heat may be too much for the lense so i went for the 35w

Aaagh I see, so you are going to be HIDing your headlights. Well I cannot help with that as I have not done it. I need the car to be legal on the road for insurance reasons. I don't want to give them an out if I needed to make a major claim.

            howdy
been looking at a set of lights to fit the sovereign bar and priced the IPF900XS at arb and tjm today. While at tjm saw the night hawk HID at around $650 apair and they looked ok. They also look like a copy of the cibie super oscar. Has anyone fitted a HID kit to these before as i have an old set of oscars in the shed? Might be worth playing around with the old lights.
Price difference on the ipf lights arb $470 down to $440 "special price" heaps of stock tjm $419 can have them early next week

I am HID'ing a set of Rallye 4000's FF as we speak.

Once that is done I am actually removing the HID headlights as , basically, they suck on coverage! Plus I would prefer not to be defectable and have a trip over the pits. I have just had one of my other vehicles defected and now remember the drama of getting something cleared by the RTA..
Going back to fatboys, I reckon they have a better light coverage once adjusted right. The HID just doesnt cover as good as it should, the reflectors are the issue.

Interesting you say that ...... i like the brilliant white light from the HID but not that impressed on beam coverage either... Were the fatboys as white as the HID and is the beam spread a lot better or slightly better than HID?
                cheers, Rod :?:

I have 6000 k HID and it is too white. Small rocks are hidden on dirt roads by this colour and this naturally can cause its own issues.

The fatboys are closer to 4500k.

I am also fitting 4500K to my Spotlights instead of 6000k.

                    Re: HID conversion question....

Well, I was way too slow to bother changing mine over to 4300k or back to fatboys.
Defected for HID lights, Tint too dark and 70 series tyres.'

Got them on ther tyres as i have an engineering certificate.
Tint, new legislation came into play on 01/01/10 so they cant touch me there either.. (ha)...
Headlights yep, well and truly done.. back to Fatboys.
But it has now cost me time off the road and a trip to the pits... ought to be fun, not..

                      hi,
do you consider the fatboys much better than the std?
I am still toying with changing back to std from my HID as per my previous email .. and especially now since the last email on this topic ...
I would need to go buy the fatboys and just want to see whether it's worth changing to them or simply go back to std ... It's not a huge issue anymore regarding high beam as i have the spotties fitted, just the low beam issue.
any thoughts you have, much appreciated.
                      cheers, Rod

The fatboys ARE an improvement over standard for sure.

HID was an improvement again but illegal as I am now paying the price for...

Sigh, One wishes the Old 120 didnt have sucky headlights from factory...
