  • Advice needed - Engel 12v Charger install / panel removal

I bought an Engel charger for my 'home made' dual battery box, which sits in the back of the Prado, feeding a Waeco with a 100Ah Pulse Hyper battery. To overcome the voltage drop issue direct from the rear ciggie lighter output for charging purposes I decided this would be the best bang-for-buck option. Link to it here: http://www.engelaustralia.com.au/cgi-bi ... ny=charger

As far as wiring goes there are three leads coming out of the charger - black (-), red (+) and blue, which is supposed to be wired to the ignition. But where? How?

Also, if anyone has any good advice on how to remove the rear side panelling where the 12v ciggie output is, so I can get behind it, please let me know - tools, methods, pictures...

    Many thanks!

hi, to get to the 12v oultet you can either pop out the base of the side pocket next to it using a screw driver covered with a rag and reach around to it or using a small screw driver and a rag you can just pop off the removable square the the 12 volt out let is mounted to, all depends on how much space you got and what u want to do, cheers

          Hey Deeptank,

Are you planning on using the supply to the rear outlet to power the charger? If you are planning on doing this I'd can it and run straight off the battery. The wiring to the plug is pretty small and you'll be loading your accessory circuit up to 10A (well thats what I can gather from the specs on the charger) whenever the car is running.

In regards to the ignition input, you will find an easy spot to splice into right where the fuse panel is on the drivers side (inside the car). You'll find a plug with 2 wires coming out of it. I think one is blue and the other red. I can't remember which one is which but check them with a multimeter if you have one.

          Cheers,

          Crammy

Thanks for the ignition info Crammy - good stuff.

I will be wiring the Engel charger direct to the main battery, so I need to know how much panelling I have to remove. Have had a quick look and I reckon it should be all good. Getting through the firewall should be a laugh... or not...!

I'll leave the rear ciggie lighter oulet as it is.

Sounds good mate. Firewall is easy, just remove your glovebox and cut a teat off the grommet that the passenger side loom passes through or poke a hole through the one on the drivers side.

Pulling the rear panel off is pretty straight forward, just don't force anything too much.
