  • Engine mount shudder

Hi, is anyone else experiencing a problem with a severe intermittent shudder whilst the vehicle is in gear at idle and under brakes (at traffic lights for eg)?
I first experienced it 4 months ago and Toyota replaced the engine mounts which fixed the problem, but it has now come back. Toyota tell me that mine is the only case of this that they are aware of - I would like to know if anyone else has had or is having this problem and if Toyota (or anyone else for that matter) has provided a permanent solution?

Mine does this and it seems to have become worse with age. I did not notice it till about the 20,000 km mark.

I have not raised the issue with Toyota yet but I will when I get down to Adelaide again.

      Hi

Yes we have this as well. My dealer has had one other vehicle they also fixed with new mounts. I am scheduled to have them replaced. Hoping it was a permanent fix

I haven;t got this problem, but my neighbour's D4D had it almost from new. It has been fixed, but only time will tell if it's permanent.

I didn't think it was the engine mounts. My petrol had it and so does my D4D. I always thought it was the tailshaft. I always make it go away by attacking it with the grease gun.

D4D Auto Diesel - Engine Shudder

Built August'07 - Ran well to 17,000k then developed the shudder when idling in gear at lights etc. Complained at 20,000k service.
Dealer determined it was an engine mount problem. Found out that the mounts are attached to a vacuum pump system with various hoses attached. Engine mounts replaced last Friday. No visible problems with the old mounts, but the shudder has disappeared (so far) and the general vibribation from the engine is noticeably less as well.
The vacuum pump system seems a little over the top!!

Mine will shake at the lights sometimes but not at other times. If I drop it into neutral then back into drive it goes away. Does this sound the same or is it a different problem ??

Diesel rattle, tailshaft thump, engine mount shudder, what next? I'm on my second Prado, don't think I'll ever get a third.

This appears to be the same symptoms I was having.

A bit harsh isn't it? Sure all those problems have been reported but they all don't appear in each and every Prado that rolls off the production line. No tailshaft thump for me yet. No engine mount shudder for me yet either. Engine rattle I had hasn't returned so far and I really can't fault the Prado at the moment. Just did a 1200km trip in it all on one tank and enjoyed every damn meter of it.

Just remember that forums tend to collect people discussing problems, and not people discussing how well their vehicles are going. Prado's have issues, but show me a 4WD that doesn't.

Same here as well. Done it since new. The car is scheduled to have the right hand engine mount replaced next week.

I agree with Iron-Paww with only a very limited number of Prados have had these issues in the past. So we can't be sure all Prados will be tainted with these issues in the future. My March 2008 build D4D Auto has 20k on the clock now and no tailshaft shudder, no D4D rattle and no engine mount shudder. Cross fingers.

But that's the point, you have to cross your fingers and hope. You shouldn't have to. My old petrol Prado was brilliant, but was written off with a car landing on it whilst I was in it.

I don't think my D4D is half of what the petrol one was. It's as if the quality has slipped. Spending over 70k on a 4WD, you don't and shouldn't expect things to go wrong, especially with a Toyota.

What is it with all these spamming tool bags lately?

Mine has started doing this only since Toyota replaced one of my injectors for the rattle... It feels like it's misfiring or something.

                              Re: Engine mount shudder

Mine had its 10K service last Friday and the first thing I noticed was the vibration in D at rest. As far as I can see all they do at the service is replace the engine oil and filter. The truck didn't do this before the service.

Toyota are test driving it tomorrow. Service guy when asked has he heard of this before said "yep, heard about this before".

Bit annoying when modern TDs are supposed to be quiet/smooth/refined.
