  • My Dual Battery Install.Help Needed.

    Hello to all in pradoland.
I am far from an electrician. I used to be able to lift heavy things though.
I am in the process of adding an auxiliary battery. So i am now
looking for a hot wire for the solenoid controller. Which wire do you use/splice into? I have fitted the arb tray which is mounted over on the passenger side. I have run most of the wires and mounted the solenoid.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

    Hi Steve

I haven't wired mine in yet (over ride)but when I do, I am planning of taking the power straight from the aux battery because if you take the power from your main and it is flat the solenoid will not engaged. Also don't forget to fuse it . 8)

    cheers

Re: My Dual Battery Install.Help Needed.

Any details available from those who have done this on how this is done?

I'm going to be doing a dual battery over the next few weeks so any assistance on this front would be great. If I get this right then you basically just short to the auxillary battery via a momentary switch. In the instruction guide on page three there is a diagram which displays this BUT it also shows a resistor and LED. I'm assuming this is independant to the Override switch and purely used to show the status of the solinoid internally within the cab.

Any pictures Steve or Leachy or anyone?

            Nick,
What type ef dual battery system are you planning on installing ?
If it is a solenoid system, which brand of solenoid are you planning to install ?

Opps. Sorry guys forgot to mention that one but then I also just assumed that the "solenoid" being discussed with the override was a redarc smart start. Was it?

Re: My Dual Battery Install.Help Needed.

                Nick,

Steve didn't used a different solenoid system and needed a switch wire that is not required with a Redarc.

                But to answer your question:

with the Redarc Smart Start the "override" is not required for normal everyday use of the dual battery system. It is simply to allow you to manually join the two batteries together ie if you flattened the main battery and needed to crank off the auxiliary. (it can also be used to allow winching off both batteries, but for simplicity I wont get into that).

If you wish to wire up the override function (it is not required and the dual battery system will work perfectly without it) it is just a matter of taking a wire from the positive of the cranking battery through a momentary push button (one that is only closed while you are pushing it and opens once you remove your finger) to the override terminal on the Redarc.
The resistor and LED in the diagram is just there to indicate when solenoid is on. This can be useful to monitor operation of the system, but is not necessary for the system to function. There is a LED built into the unit that provides the same functionality. It is just a matter of whether would want the display available in the car. Personally I haven't bothered to add the extra indication. If I want to check the operation of the system I just lift the bonnet and look at the LED on the unit. Though the remote LED may be useful if you mount the Redarc in a spot where you can't see the built-in LED.

In my own Prado I haven't bothered to connect up the override. In the very rare event that I did need to crank off the Aux. battery I would just use a piece of wire (being a sparking I always have some wire in the Prado) to jumper from the main battery to the override, and start the car.

If you do decide to wire up the override make sure you put a suitably sized fused in the wire from the main battery to the switch (as close to the main battery as possible). I notice while the Redarc literature shows fuses in the power circuit it does not show a fuse in the override circuit. I would definitely recommend the addition of a fuse to the override control circuit.
