  • Doors locking themselves???

I have done a search and couldnt seem to find what I was looking for. The wifes Prado has developed an intermittent problem with the door locks.

Heres what happened when it did it to me, I unlocked the doors via the remote, opened the rear right door to belt in the young fella and heard all the door locks go. The wife had told me it did it a couple of days before so I unlocked it with the key again, opened the drivers door and sure enough it locked all the doors again??

Tryed a few different combinations and ideas, but even the doors that were open were getting the locks locked. Once the key was in the ignition it stopped and all doors stayed unlocked?

I know the old Subaru we had, had a timer that if the door wasnt opened itd relock after a time. I thought maybe the door sensors werent working but I assume it uses the same sensors for the interior lights which are working fine?

I thought it was maybe the timer faulty but again the sensor should override the timer? Has anyone had anything similiar happen, I am concerned that the wife may accidently lock the keys in the car with the young fella strapped into his seat, not good in this heat and she has started carrying the spare key in her pocket as a precaution.

Dont really want to have to go back to Toyota for it as I am not scared of wires but will admit I am out of ideas on where to start.
Its an late 03 GXL if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you unlock the doors and don't open one for about 30sec it will lock itself again.

What's happening to you definately doesn't sound right. Probably some module somewhere starting to pack it in.

Sounds odd, have you checked the fuses ?

Often Toyota's do funny things when fuses blow
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

Certainly sounds like the sensor is playing up.

Does it happen with just the one door (the one you open to strap the young fella in) ??? ...... or does it happen with all doors ??? This might help narrow it down to the central module ... or to something local to a single door.

My first thought was that the auto lock function was linked to the interior lights .... but (from memory) the lights go on when the car is unlocked ... even if no door is opened.

Its certainly worth looking at all the fuses ..... you never know with Toyotas

        Cheers

Yeh checked the fuses they all seemed Ok, it did recently blow the front auxillary point fuse surely it cant have caused a spike somewhere???

Chippy it does it off all doors no matter which one you open first. Now that you have mentioned the lights you are right they do come on when you unlock the car hhrrrrmm might have to investigate a bit further tonight.

If it were a Ford or Holden I would have had the wiring loom out half a dozen times to fix other faults so would have a better indication of where to start.  All the Toyotas I have had have been great electrically so this is a rarety for me.

            Sounds odd.

The only other thread in relation to door locking is here: http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php ... =door+lock

from our experience what you are detailing is the normal behaviour of our 2006 Prado. unlock the doors, open either of the rear pax doors to do something, and the others auto-lock @ 20-30 secs. first time this happened SWMBO had sat her keys on the pax seat, and i was in Tokyo with the spare set. had she shut the door she would have been locked out of house and Prado

reported it when it went in for maintenance 1.5 years ago -- TADTS (they all do that sir) was the Brookvale dealer's reply so beware....

My 2006 does not lok the doors once you open "ANY" door.

If I unlock it and then need to do something else I just pop open any door and close it immediately again, the car does not relock.

I can't say I've noticed mine doing this either.

Sounds like the BCM (or whatever it's called in the Prados) is having a minties moment. Could be an input problem from a relay or something along those lines. Is it possible to get the wiring schematics for the Prado? If so you'll get a better understanding of how it works.

Glad to know I am not the only one experiencing it, ours has done it as soon as 5 secs after the door is unlocked. I did some more looking last night and the wife has told me it hasnt done it in a week now?? I have gone through every fuse in the vehicle and cant find any blown. I cant seem to find any wires that look damaged or similiar.

I think I agree with crammy I will need a wiring digram before I go much further.

Thats odd boof, sounds like something maybe shorting across to the lock function rather than the auto relock timing out.

Just another thought, try using your spare key for a while without having your normal key with you(might be a pain in the butt, but you may need to wind a window down first)... Maybe the key is playing up? It's plausible seeing that it doesn't lock when the key is in the ignition..

Odd to say the least. Mine certainly has never done this. Once I unlock and open a door, all doors stay unlocked until I lock them again. If I don't open a door then the vehicle locks again just as reported above.

For my money I'd check what MR Intens has suggested and see if the interior light is coming on when you open a door. This would tell you if the open doors have been registered.

A faulty key is possible too I suppose. The lock signal might be going off without you doing anything. Get your main set of keys far away from the car and use your spare set to see if it still occurs. Maybe try using the valet key as well with the remotes out of range.

Could also be a fault with the drivers door controls going off without you doing anything.

Sounds like something is up though.

I'd almost rule out the faulty key scenario.

I tried locking mine with the key with a door open and it won't work.

I have done some more checking, the interior lights come on with the doors so I dont think its that. I went through all the door sensors and relays I could find and gave them all a good clean with contact cleaner, it hasnt done it since so I guess I will need to just wait and see.
