  • Power windows when ign off.

This is the first time I have posted on this forum but I have been reading it since I bought my 1st Prado ealry this year.
I have modified the wiring so that the power windows will work when the ignition is off. The channel changer from our place objects to not being able to open the window when we stop for fuel etc.
The modification is easy. Remove the button control on the drivers door. Peel back the black insulation on the wiring for about 10 cm . Identify the white wire and the black/white wire. they are one above the other as they enter the plug. Cut the white wire about 4cm from the plug. Using a splicing connector connect the plug side white wire to the black white wire.
Fold the loom side white wire back in the form
Tape up the wires and restore the switch panel.
What this does is pick up the permanently hot wire that operates the central locking mechanism and provide it to the windows regardless as to the ignition being on or off.
    2003 TD,Bull ,auto,bull bat,Driving Lights,rear camera,rino roof bars, still to come Snorkel and chip.

that's very clever! i'm always digging the keys out of the pocket and putting them in the ignition to wind them down...

Any pics to go with your mod? Could this lead to any other unforeseen issues?

Have heard this mod popular in new Hilux for a while now, particularly Dual Cabs.

Hope this isnt considered hijacking the thread, but has anyone installed an Automatic Window Closer to their Prado :?:
Seen them advertised on E-Bay. Automatically detects any open windows when using central locking, and closes them.

          Hi all

I have done this mod not only to my current Prado D4D but also a previous Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan Patrol and many other family and friend's cars. It is relatively easy to do and has no reliability or technical downsides with one exception. The little green LEDs are continuously lit 24/7 (looks good at night  ) and these are obviously drawing power from the battery. Also the electronics inside the switch assembly will also be drawing a certain amount of battery power. However, I have never found this to be a problem in the past.

On this note, I blame the low D4D charging voltage for my battery going flat if I don't use the car for a week but this modification won't be helping things. However, if you use your car every day, don't think twice.
If you really wanted to get super fancy, you could wire up a changeover switch so that you can have it both ways

          Cheers - John

Or even better a timer circuit like in most Euro cars where you can still close the windows for about 30 seconds after turning the engine off 8)

              Hi all

Here is what I did to my 120 series D4D. However, I have a suspicion that not all Prados are exactly like this.

              No responsibility etc. etc.

              Cheers - John

                Flat battery

I know this probably isn't the thread and is a bit off topic but in reply to grey nomad. The battery going flat is an issue for us too. The Prado can sit for weeks at a time and not get used so we end up with flat batteries too unless i put the charger on. The garage is dark so the solar cell doesn't get any sunlight. Do others have this problem with flat batteries.

I did in the Mav as it would sit for weeks without being used. I bought a ctek charger and leave it on 24x7. No flat battery problems anymore.

Sounds like a great mod but I would be worried about some numskull being able to wind the windows down and quietly break into the car, especially at night when you can see the leds. But I guess it depends on how honest and smart they are!

i had this thought too, but went back and forward for a while and thought that to get to the panel they'd have to break a window.. or now i think about it again, put part of a coat hanger through and push the button down, working on the assumption that you knew the lights being on meant the windows were active... and in either case, once you're in it doesn't really matter if the windows work cos you could just open the door..

i still like the idea though!

                          Power windows when ign off.

I tried this method of direct power to windows today and windows worked perfect But now the remote central locking doesn't work. Has anyone else had the same problem?? if so did you work out why ???

                            Hi 2003GXL

I guess that you have a 2003 model. When I was travelling last year, I met a bloke who saw my modification and wanted me to do it to his. So I got out my little "document" (as shown above) but his plug and socket were different even though his was a 120 series. We were out in the bush with nothing but a multimeter and soldering iron and I couldn't find a permanent source of +12v on his plug. So I politely declined. Maybe yours is different to the diagram shown above and maybe you got your source of permanent +12v from somewhere else that has somehow interfered with your central locking.
That's why I mentioned that not all Prados are the same. However, on saying that, this is really quite a simple modification that I have done to many cars over the years.

                            Cheers - John
