  • Lighting question with a twist!

    Hi

Initially I added a plug and play 35W 6000K HID hi and lo kit from these folks
    http://www.hidworld.com/cart.php?target ... ory_id=250
Easy enough to fit but the forward beam penetration is just OK because of the headlight beam pattern.

Next I've installed a pair of Narva 225's driving lamps (with a Narva harness etc) - spot and spread beam combo's converted to 55W HID from these nice folks - and yes on a level straight road it will illuminate 3km's!
    http://predatorparts.com.au/lighting.html

Now the query I have is - to operate the driving lamps I have to switch them on and off via the standard Narva switch, they operate after the headlights are turned on but I would like them to operate when I flick the high beam stalk and use their switch to turn them on or off should I so desire.

The nearside standard headlamp connector is plugged into the hi/lo HID harness and I've derived the live for the driving lamps from the offside headlamp connector cable which is live when the high beam is operated.

    Help!

You will need a relay. Run a constant positive from your battery and a pickup from your high beam and then simply wire to your switch.

        Bob,

Do the spots come on with your low beams? You say that you have to operate them with the switch, what happens if you leave the switch on and flick down to low beam? Not knowing the kit you have, a simple relay operated spottie setup should go something like this.

        Control side (coil side)

High beam active - fuse - cabin switch - relay coil ... relay coil - neg (-12v)

        Supply

        Battery - fuse - relay - spotties/HID kit ... spotties/HID kit - neg (-12v)

I can't remember the terminal numbers for the relay but you get the idea.

Should be an easy install so it's a little hard to say where the issue is. With a plug and play narva harness it should have worked fine. At a guess, the power for the spottie switch should come from the high beam at the headlight and yours is coming from a constant supply instead. Is that possible?

            Thanks Chaps

I have used a standard Narva loom, relay , fuse, switch etc.

The Narva's operate via the Narva switch when low beam is on.

When I flick the stalk to high beam the spots do not automatically come on.

However I have tested which of the cables at the standard offside headlamp connector becomes live when the stalk is flicked to high beam and I have taken the spotties supply from this cable.

Hope this explanation is clearer ops:

That is probably where its set up wrong, the supply should be from the battery and the hi beam wire should be like a trigger wire to your relay if that makes sense. You may just have them crossed over on your relay, try swapping them over.

I haven't got a image to show but this should be how it is hooked up.

                Pin 85- high beam trigger
                Pin 86- straight to earth
                These two operate the relay.
Pin 30- fused power supply straight from the battery. Wire rated to 50 amps fused to about 30.
Pin 87- to the igniters or whatever set-up you have. I am unfamiliar with aftermarket HID but that is the way to wire up spotties.
With the spottie switch just put it inline between pin 85 and the headlight wiring.

                  Clear as mud bob!

                  So far we've established that:

 Spotties work on low beam
:?: Does the narva switch have any effect on the spotties when in low beam?
:?: Can you switch the spotties on without having the lights on?

 They work in high beam but you have to switch them on via the Narva switch.
:?: What happens if you leave the switch on and flick back to low beam?

*** Ok, I've just had a look at the diagram on the narva webiste, it says you can trigger the relay with negative switching. Are you sure it's not in that mode? (however it's setup on the harness).

                  Have a look here.

That picture is @##@$! Surely everyone wants their lights hooked to high beam only. Or is it cool to have spotties with no head lights on?

Thanks I've played around with a number of variations of where the trigger wire is connected and mode of the pos or neg switch, run out of time today but I'll have another look tomorrow

Looks like an overly complicated way of doing a simple task to me .
However if you have placed the components as shown you need to connect the "switch box " to the high beam wire at the light combination switch and it will provide a -ve to the headlight relay(probably a red blk wire) therefore the correct setting for the "switch box" will be negative switch operation .
For me I would move it to the engine bay just before the relay (in the relay box) and connect to the same coloured wire set up the same and it will be easier to connect .
Or connect it to the switched side of the relay (+ve to the lights )(red wire ) ,and set the "switch box " to +ve operation , this is how it would be connected in older cars without a headlight relay .
The first method is preferable as it restricts fault currents .

Haha u want to know why? I know. The ground pin on the h4 headlight connector is not a true ground. It is a relative ground. So what you do is if you want high beam with spotties and low beam spotties off you need to wire a automotive relay to it and get the ground pin from the connector not from battery or chassis.

I did the same on my car. It works good.
                          Thanks

I had the same issue .... i am at work, not much time, but will send you info on how to wire up tomorrow... It is not like the std wire up.
                            cheers, Rod
