  • Broken Upper Control Arm

So I noticed an occasional knocking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle last week. I got the chance to get under the Prado on the weekend and have a look around, and found that the left upper control arm has broken. It has snapped up near the bracket on the axle. I had my OME suspension fitted just over a month ago, and have been giving it a good workout since, but nothing extreme.

My question is... has this happened to anybody else? I have searched, but could not find anything. Also, how easy do you think it would be to replace? I have a replacement part on order and plan to try fitting it myself when it arrives.

Haven't seen that type of damage before... lucky first

Let us know how the fix goes...

I wouldn't imagine it to be too difficult to replace. Possibly the bushes are meant to be pressed in and out, but you could probably improvise if that's the case and you don't have a press. A hoist would be very handy!

Those upper control arms are tiny, aren't they!

Thankfully I dont have to change the bushes... they come fixed to the control arm. Fingers crossed it should be a case of jacking up the rear of the vehicle and doing a straight swap.

I have had my upper trailing arm / link bolt back out on the trail (while LF&R was driving) the upper links take a lot of stress. I swaped the OEM links for the All-Pro Off-Road.

            Hi Wolfcub

If I remember rightly, Phil Gaukroger reported that a 90 series Prado broke the rear upper control arm on the Madigan track a few years back. From memory they welded it in the field and kept going and the repair held for the rest of the trip.

The same thing happened to me ........ Twice on my last trip. And it was the left control arm too. I got it welded up in the bush, and are holding too.

I have started looking for aftermarket replacement, but I haven't found to much.

Very easy to change out. Don't take both off at the same time if can. The axle can wander off a bit and you have to faff around pulling it back in again. That goes for all the rear components really. I found out the hard way of course.

I've done a pretty thorough search myself, nobody seems to make an aftermarket rear upper.

A few do the lower, but as far as 90 series Prado's go (or the US equivalent suspension-wise, the 96-02 4Runner), there doesn't seem to be any demand for heavy duty uppers.

I'm sure there'd be people who could knock up some custom links, maybe even with heim joints *ponders*

I would just reinforce the original. But, it makes me wonder if the extra load on there is due to other components not doing their job properly. Wonder if the lower bushes are worn or seized up. Can't really see how any significant load is placed on them.

just sent an email of to snake racing, I know that they make upper control arms for patrols, so maybe these might fit too, or they might be able to make something up.

                            Re: Broken Upper Control Arm

                            Sorry for the late reply

When i was talking to snake racing they wanted me to source a control arm and send it to them.........So that was a little bit to much effort. I might try and make some up or get a local shop to do something. These control arms seem to break when the prado is used for offroading. Has any check to see is 120, 100 or 80 series control arms are similar?
