  • Curcuit breaker

I have recently installed a dual battery system. I decided on the redarc isolator 1ooamp and noted on the installation instructions that a fuse should be installed before and after the isolator. As I used 4 b & s cables I found it hard to get an in line fuse so decided on a circuit breaker which I found at Jaycar. It is rated at 120 amp and has a digital read out of the voltage. As it was about $30 I decided on just one which I installed after the isolator/before the 2nd battery.
My problem is that the curcuit breaker seem to trip out regulary which stops the 2nd battery from charging.
Any thoughts to what I may have done wrong?

Would be better to have a fuse from the main battery and the circuit breaker after the 2nd battery otherwise its not really protecting anything you have have running off it.! Also I noticed the redarc 100amp has a max inrush of 400amps, this may have something to do with the reason it trips out on you.!

      Thanks Justo,
I do actually have a fuse after the 2nd battery. As this wiring is 6 b & s it was easier to install an in-line fuse.
Do you think I should move the circuit breaker before the isolator?
Do you think the circuit breaker is required at all?

I'm not an auto lecci, but I'm pretty sure there's no point having the breaker between the batteries. I would have it after the 2nd batt and maybe have a fuse box running of that.. there's a few others with this setup and similar in this thead HERE

          Thanks Justo,
          The link was very helpfull.
I appreciate your time and also everyone else.
I'm going to remove the CB and rely on fuses.

The fuse that is usally spec'ed in dual batt setups, is a fusable link, it is a short piece of wire with a known rating. As with all fuses they are there to protect wiring (stop fires). They are usually placed right at each battery, that way if a cable shorts to ground, the link will "burn out quickly" reducing damage and hopefully avoiuding fire.

Problem with circuit breakers is the are designed trip trip quickly, so if your aux battery is quite low and the redarc cuts in the instant current could be 200A, not a problem for the redarc, but the CB will see it as a fault and trip. Most fuses are slow to react, and can handle this for a short while.

This is one type of fusable link

They are requided because we run large cable to minimise the loss between the batteries, as these cable are capable of carring probably 500amps before failing, but in the process will either catch on fire, or worse cause the battery to explode.

If you are going to install these, remember they are not to protect the redarc, they are protecting the cables and batteries, so you need 2, 1 at each battery.

                Hi MarkD

When I was setting up my dual battery I used Projector Fused Battery Distribution Terminal on both the Main and Aux. These provide 2x30amp and1x150 amp fuse per side.

On both batteries the 150 amp fuse is the charge circuit and main outputs with camper cable from Aux. The fuse acts as a CB / Fuseable link.

The two 30amps on Main for spotties and Brake Controller.
On Aux 30 amps radios (HF / CB) and fridge

                  Hi Mark,

I also have a C/Breaker from Jaycar installed with my dual battery system however I only use for running the accessories off the 2nd battery. As JUSTO said the inrush of amps would trip the circuit breaker when the redarc cuts in for your application.

By all means keep the C/Breaker as mine has been great, but use it for all of your accessories such as your fridge.

                  Cheers

                  Mitch
