  • OME Suspension

Am looking at getting this fitted in the next few weeks and am just after some views on which spring and shock combination would work together, would really like to hear from others that have OME suspension already.

The shocks are either comfort or firm but there are a number of spring options. The 880/890 springs should go with the comfort shocks all others with firm.

    Front Spring Options:
    OME880 - Up to 50kg extra
    OME881 - 50-150kg extra
    OME882 - Over 150kg extra

    Rear Options:
    OME890 - No Load
    OME891 - Constant 150kg
    OME892 - Constant 300kg

I have a ARB Sahara bar and under bonnet compressor - not intending to get a winch. The rear may get roller draws but also depends on if they fit with the rear A/C or not. So not heaps of weight to carry around every day, but enough over the front end now to drop it about 15mm from stock.

The current setup I am considering is OME881 and firm shocks at the front and OME890 with firm shocks at the rear. If i need to, will fit poly airs for when its loaded up to go away - which is why I prefer the firm shocks.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome - only restraint is it must be OME, cant get any other brands

      Hi VL400,

I too have a 98 model and OME setup alround with heavy duty springs. There really isnt much different in the spring range between whats avaliable that you have listed. I like the way our Prado handles with the heavy duty springs although im running medium duty struts and shocks. This allows for good flex and a more comfortable ride than a jolting one. I like the front end height although it doesnt flex as well as the rear.
In the future sometime I will be installing a steel bar to compensate the ride and flex a little. We have a 100ltr LPG tank behind the rear seat, draw and fridge slide system that is never taken out. Ive installed Poly air bags in the rear although so far I havnt needed them when our camper is attached. Im also cosidering fitting a dual tyre carrier as soon as funds are there. Im very happy with my OME setup and I also have the same in my Vitara.
You just need to consider what your likely to be carrying and doing with your vehicle. We live in Alice Springs and most roads up here are corrigated so I have setup the suspension to handle theses type of roads.
Just remember, shocks do fail and springs break. So if you spend a little more you can generally expect them to last a little longer.
      Zook.

Thanks for the replies. With the other half working for a certain 4b shop its hard to go past the products they sell and the price we get it at, seeing as they only sell OME there is not much choice really!

I have ended up ordering something similar to what zookcubr has. Got OME881/N91S at the front and OME891/N86 at the rear. Its HD front and rear (for the petrol, diesel HD is OME882 at the front) and firm shocks. Will see how it all goes, installed in a couple of weeks

I also have the same kinda setup like yours, they really shine onroad and offroad, lately I've swapped my OME coils with a set of King Springs whilst keeping the OME shocks and they turned out very good

Where you gonna fit them? I got them from ARB Osborne Park

Thats what I plan to do Rudyn. Upgrade to Kings springs, and ToughDog shocks/struts at a later date. Ome is still good, just sag after a bit.

Well had the suspension fitted yesterday and it has transformed the car. The original shocks were actually found to be in reasonable condition after they were removed, but the new OME's are so much better. The ride is firm, but not overly, and is less jaring over bigger bumps. No more floating around on the road either

So the results of OME881/OME891 springs....
                    ---------------------Before--------After------Overall Lift
                    Left Front--------726mm-------770mm-------44mm
                    Right Front-------728mm-------770mm-------42mm
                    Left Rear---------758mm-------804mm-------46mm
                    Right Rear--------753mm-------804mm-------51mm

Very happy with the lift and handling, now to fit some bigger tyres to fill the guards...

No probs Grande, glad you found it useful - KZJ90's post was more than i could find in any OME book at ARB. The 890 springs would prob make the car sit a little more level and slightly more forgiving over bumps when unloaded, i may get some of these and give em a go at some point.

The HID's are fantastic, but dont think they are really worth the retail price they ask for em though. Had cibie and hella's before these and would never go back to halogen globes. Its cheaper to buy some 900XS IPF's and put a HID setup into them. I am not sure if the IPF HID's reflector is any different, but the body is just the normal 900XS.

                        Re: OME Suspension

Well nearly a year on and am planning to fit a winch soon. The OME springs have settled around 10mm, although this was within the first 1000km. So in readiness for the 20 odd kg of winch I installed some trim packers, part number is OME95PF5. They are 3.86mm thick and fit under the spring base (much like the cir-clip on the bilsteins). I figured they would give around 10mm of lift each, so with 2 Spring packers per side...

                        ---------------------Before--------After------Overall Lift
                        Left Front--------760mm-------780mm-------20mm
                        Right Front-------758mm-------780mm-------22mm

So From the Standard Suspension to now...
