  • ARB DUAL BATERY SYSTEM

Just had a dual battery system fitted to the Prado by ARB. Very neat job, but price to match. Just a word of warning to any one contemplating the same. Get a written quote if you intend to have any extra work done. I had the basic set up as per the ARB accessory book, but also had the rear plug rewired and hella plug added plus an Anderson plug fitted. These are also done to their "set price" not to a hourly rate. Even with a large discount given on their rate I was shocked when I received the bill. All up $1160.
My own fault for not checking and assuming an hourly rate would be charged.
Nearly all of their work has a written cost avaialable and should be checked before you agree to the work
All up though can't complain about the standard of workmanship and the advice on other matters regarding my vehicle were very good.
the old saying " it pays to shop around" is certainly good advice.

I've just recently had the ARB dual battery set up done too. Where did they put your 2nd battery? Up with the fuel filter? ARB flat refused to put mine front drivers side where most people have put theirs. Guard cracking issues they said. The pics are in another thead here in the electrical section. Cost me near a cool grand too.!!!!!!!!

I have the ARB dual battery kit. Battery is located on the passenger side.

I didn't get the rear wiring done as I'm not sure what I wanted. I'll run wiring myself later. 100% happy with the install.

Can either of you please confirm what size/type of 2nd battery was installed by ARB? Do you also have any photos?

Come on where are the photos, I am interested in this thread as i am making enquires with ARB. i have been quoted $200 for the tray alone. I mounted the compressor behind the headlight, so will more than likely go with the ARB tray. Although the battery will be smaller. Just how much smaller are they? If anyone can post some Photos up would be much appreciated.

          Cheers

Ok well here's my pics of the ARB Dual battery install. Exactly as in the "my dual battery installation" thread. See that thread for some of the issues I came across. The battery ARB gave me was a smaller sized deep cycle N50EX.

If you want me to Photo anything else just let me know.

The N50EX is a hybrid battery it is a combination of deep cycle and cranking battery.

I also wanted a dual battery in the engine bay of my petrol 120-series - mainly for running a fridge...

ARB said "No way, wheel arch will crack. Will not do it." And to be honest, after the arse-over-tit service I had with a bullbar and fog lights from ARB this was probably a blessing. The guy then tried to flog me a 75Ah Thumper for nearly $900,-. I drove off...

Another independent mob quoted me $1,200,- for a Piranha jobbie and an N70 sized battery, but this would've gone over the wheel arch, so I wasn't too keen on it. Some people have apparently had no problems, but others have, so I didn't want to take a chance.

So, I have decided to build my own battery box with a PulseHyper 110Ah gel battery, a bit of timber and a few components from Jaycar and Whitford's Marine. This will cost me about $450,- all up - including a bottle of Jim Beam. BTW, Autobarn wanted $450,- for the battery, but Battery World went down to $349,- after some phone haggling.

Initially I'll be using a Ctek XS7000 to charge up at home and then trickle charge it from the rear ciggie lighter, which is what I've been doing with a Waeco RAPS-36 so far anyway. One day I'll pull my finger out and will do a 'proper' dual battery wiring to the rear, but reckon this will run my fridge for at least a week with a bit of driving every couple of days. Heck, might even get a solar panel... Hmmm...

This approach has its pros (cheaper, portable...) and cons (won't power a winch, but then again I don't have one...) but overall I reckon this should do the trick for the fridge (averages about one Amp per hour) and the odd camp light. I'll slap up a few pics when it's done. Just waiting for the voltage monitor to arrive from an eBayer in Perth... "Hurry up man!"
