  • Winch Battery ??

G'day Matt ... haven't you got that winch in yet ???

Everyone I spoke to (even some knowledgeable blokes) were saying that you should hook your winch power up to the starter battery ... because most blokes tend to run a deep cycle battery as their AUX battery .... and heavy winching off a deep cycle battery sucks its guts out.

I've got my winch hooked up to the second battery ... but they are identical Exides ... and the Redarc allows me open the circuit and use both batteries ... hence the big cable between them.

.... but then I have the advantage of carting a deep cycle battery in the CT.

There's bound to be a heap more spark savvy blokes on PP who can either confirm or deny this.

    Cheers

here ya r matt try these links, as the winch uses a crap load of amps you will want a battery with a crap load of cca (cold cranking amps), i suggest getting the battery with the most cca you can fit in ya battery tray

these r exide tractor and commerical batteries

these r 4x4 and light comercial batteries

Cranking battery is the go, and make it your main battery, thats where the alternator will feed to first hence this battery will recover quicker
Winching is a 30 second on 30 second off sort of task, with the motor running. Make sure you never allow the winch to be pulling amperage direct from the alternator, the short burst method will make sure this doesnt happen High cca batteries will recover very quickly from short winching, second batteries wont mainly because of the methods used for isolation

        xvprado,

My setup is slightly different, I have a solenoid between the main and second battery (no isolation). Its hooked to the ignition and my aux battery is a deep cycle. Therefore when the ignition is turned off the aux doesn't get charged.

So if I winch of the aux and keep the motor running would this kill the aux even though the charge is being put back at the same time :?:

        Thanks,

You should get away with it once or twice. If you were a tour operator where you winched regulalry it would Kark it.
And as mentioned by XVprado, 30 on, 30(or more) off.
Thats if its a long pull under load, not if your just running the cable/ rope back in, Probably not needed I mentioned that, just thought i would.

As for the original question, Starting batteries are the go, Winches can get up to 300+ amps in a pull, granted that is at a start and at an almost stall under load,
but as asked if the alternator would help with the charge at the same time the answer to that should be obvious now. No way would it keep up.
