  • In-cab winch control

    Thought this might be useful.

In the Mav I have the solenoid box out of harms way in the engine bay so I fitted an in-cab switch and extra socket on the bar. The Warn socket cost me $100

When I swap the winch to the Prado I'll use the Warn wireless remote I bought in the US for AU$130

Wiring is very easy as per the diagram.

    here is my winch controls.
The switch on the right turns the controls on, stops me accidently knocking the winch in or out.
I just used some trailer plug cable from the control box to the switch.
I could post more photos, or a diagram if anyone was interested.

I just removed the plug off the solenoid box and moved it into the cab. Neat in cab controls that can't be fiddled with and no way a scumbag can stick a paper clip in to cut the car in half (unless they break in and find the plug ops: ) and the winch can still be controlled from outside the car.

I had a look at your diagram, mine is done slightly diferent, Ive taken the power from the control box, Ive basicly put the in cab switch in parallel with the plug. I also have the ground switched along with the positive, same as the supplied controler.

Here is a pic of my install. I had my switch made from 12 Volt Guy using the same diagram as above.

If you saw Gone in 60 Seconds he made the NO2 switch and "GO BABY GO" button for Elenor.

I put in a second winch because of all the Hummers up here. I can rescue 2 at a time. I can post pics of the install when I get my computer back from the Geek Squad.

At the Brisbane car show earlier this year there were a couple of H3 Hummers dressed up in finest Pimp specs, 22" rims, road tyres and everything that could be chrome plated was. The guy in charge of showing off the things was very arrogant and started raving about how good they were off road. So I asked the obvious quesiton, if Hummers are so good off road why do they have two VERY BIG recovery points on the front? Needless to say he walked off in a huff.

Hummers........ All show & no go.

At our Back-2-School event last year an H-3 showed up (late) and was left on the green trails because he didn't want to be shown up if left in a tight spot.

                              Re: In-cab winch control

Well thanks to Ben, I went out and ordered a kit from the 12 volt guy myself and fitted it up on the Cairns tech day. http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4643

Many thanks to Gimp and Crammy who actually did most of the work and to Joey who supplied the garage, beer fridge and sledging.

The solenoid box is mounted in where the 2nd battery space is and the 'in cabin winch panel' is wired in parallel to the hand controller, meaning that if I need to get out of the vehicle the winch can still be operated with the hand controller.

The winch panel is located to the left of the steering column and I removed the large square blank and had to cut some of it out to let the back of the switches and wiring to fit through. A power wire is connected to the 12 volt ingnition supply, as a result a red LED at the end of the toggle lights up when activated and it will only activate when the ignition is on. The rest of the wires were then fed through a large rubber grommet to the right of the steering column (but under the dash) with the assistance of a coat hanger. Locating which wires in the solenoid box that activate the in and out control on the winch was done with the help of a multi metre and then the matching wires from the cabin switch were linked in parrallel to those in the solnoid box with a special type of clip (the name escapes me but Crammy can help with that one). That's it in a nutshell and a simple paragraph doesn't do justice to the amount of hours that were spent wiring this thing up. Below are some photo's of the panel and box.
