  • Dual Factory Aerials?

    All,

    I just came back from a 4 week trip thru the Gulf with 2 x D4-D Prados (1 x Manual & 1 x Auto) towing Camper Trailers.

Manual averaged approx 12.0 l/100km while auto averaged 13.3 l/100km but was towing heavier trailer (I don't want to get into discussion about fuel consumption).

My new Polaris running OziExplorer was just fantastic and I am happy to talk to anyone about how it is setup etc. Highly recomended.

But, to the topic of my post: While in Karumba, we had both vehicles parked beside each other and I happened to notice that one vehicle (Jan08 build) had a single factory radio aerial (port side) while the slightly older vehicle (April07 build) has 2 factory aerials (both port and starboard sides).

The newer vehicle has the Polaris unit plus single factory aerial and it gets inferior radio reception than the older vehicle with original factory radio but dual factory aerials so I can't confirm if the poorer reception is due to single aerial or Polaris radio.

Has anyone else noticed that newer vehicles have a single aerial only while older vehicles have dual aerials? (I searched on this topic but couldn't find any similar posts).

    Thanks

    Andrew

I have an 08 GXL and single on-glass antenna. I've had vehicles with on-glass antennas before and the recpetion has been perfect. The Prado reception is that bad I am going to fit a dedicated AM/FM antenna when I wire up the UHF antenna.

I've got an '03 and its got the aerial on each side.

BlkMav what sort of window tint do you have? When I had the windows on my Jeep done, I went for a top of the range metal foil tint but the rear window with the aerial they did in a cheap non-metal tint as they reckoned the metal foil interfers with the radio reception.

As I bought my Prado 2nd hand I don't know what sort of tint it has but my radio reception seems fine.

      Cheers.

          Andrew,
Both my 08 VX and 04 GXL have the aerial on both sides. The GXL has cheap tint and the VX has factory tint. No issues with reception on either.

          blkmav,
Not sure if the GXL and VX would have a different aerial setup in 08 model ? I wouldn't have thought so. My VX is a June 08 model.

Bad reception could also just be due to a dodgy connection at the Head Unit. Tell em to check it when its in for its service.

Two perfectly matched antennae will only give 3dBi gain over a single one at best , so whether you have one or two will not significantly alter performance . Two will give better diredtional performance , experience tells me that the RF performance of cheap chinese units is only average and certainly not as good as the factory unit .
