Hi There

Looking at purchasing a fluro light that i can run from a cig outlet that will be bright enough to throw some area light around the rear of the car when setting up at night.

There are some brands out there - that are not bright at all - just wanted to see which ones are recommended - was thinking fluro - but with the advent of LED - there might also be some bright LED's out there as well.

Cheers

hey Orangepeel,

I got myself a versa light fluoro and it's absolutely awesome. I made up a bracket for it to hang off an extendable tent pole and strap it to the spare tyre with some tie down straps. Using this method you can tie it to anything really and it keeps the bugs away being so high up.

We used it up the cape and it lit up the whole campsite with ease. It'd have to be the best light we saw on the trip. I bought mine from an electircal wholesaler for about $100, but you can get them off the net a little cheaper.

A bit hard to see here but's it's strapped to a log.

And lighting up the campsite. (photo taken without flash at night)

I got one of the pirahna fluoro lights and have used the same arrangement with an extendable tent pole attached to the spare wheel. I used 6 mm elastic attached to the spare wheel. I simply pull the elastic back, drop the tent pole down, and the elastic holds the pole in place.

When the light is high up, it spreads a great light over most of the camping area. Certainly enough to cook by.

Hi Orangepeel,

Can you please fill out you location details.

I have an ARB fluro (rebadged) similar to the versalite, primus brand and pirahna light. Puts of awesome light.

Cost me about 70$, and now the local ARB has them for 45$ (excess stock from camping show) ARB is soon releashing a LED light for about 100$, much like the Ironman one and many other various brands.

Because I am a tight a#$% with electrical stuff, I bought a cheap as chips 12V light from supercheap for about $10 and added some cable lying around the house and put the ciggie plug on that.
If I need more light I put it closer to the job.
As for the insects if you wrap yellow cello around it you wont see any.

Total cost for my job was $20 bucks and it is still lasting.

I deal with a low voltage company through work called Springers (http://www.springers.com.au/default.aspx), I went there last week to look at LED work lights for one of our trucks. After talking to Joe, we decided on these Awning LED (http://www.springers.com.au/Products.aspx?ProductID=864), low current use, life time warranty, and apparently LEDs don't attract bugs. He took me into one of there offices to demonstrate any of the 12v lights I liked, this one lit the 5m x5m office very nicely.

He also recommended these 12v Fluros (http://www.springers.com.au/Products.aspx?ProductID=378). They have been replacing 2 x 20w halogen worklights on Rural Fire trucks with these, they light the area behind the truck better and don't have the blinding effect of the worklights. I think they're german made, and very efficient.

I'm hoping that we accidentally order a couple too many of each of these!! lol

I have 2 of these and for the price, I can't rate them high enough. Awesome lights with nice long leads. They are our sole source of lighting every time we go away and work a treat.

We also run a versalight. It has bounced around in the camper trailer for several years now and keeps working very well.

I've got 2 of these ones. Bought some 2000mAH Gameboy batteries (ebay bargin - $0.99 each), pulled the casing off them and wired up 4 batteries in each, with connections like old nokia chargers only larger and rigged the cut-off lead with the correct plug to suit.

Batteries were a tight squeeze, but we get about 10hrs out of it.
All up, as these were bought on sale at Supercheap - $46 each. Exactly what I wanted. Evened popped inside some Neodymium magnets top and bottom and now can either rope them in place or attach them to a tarp pole.

Cheapest similar around was $89, but not as many lights and didn't have the hours capacity I wanted.

Supercheap had sold out when I went there so I bought one off eBay. Cost me $10 and $20 shipping. Search for 'DOSS SUPER BRIGHT 60 LEDS GARAGE WORK LIGHT' to find it
